Personally I don’t think Kane helps the team or is the right fit. In an fantasy world we make a huge deal for Stamkos (again fantasy) who can score goals and move from the center to right wing spot as needed and actually be able to play decent defense and not be a liability out there. For that move I’d be willing to trade a lot for him (favorite player as well, so biased there). Rangers need a winger that can score. I don’t see Kane filling that role, he’d just be another Panarin and be a liability on defense, which is something we need less of not more of.

Hmmm, of the players that might actually be available, Tarasenko sounds more like what you are describing as a need. But he has injury issues but is also cheaper in cap hit and assets to give up ... I am sure Kane would not hurt the Rangers but sometimes the fit is not there even with great players

That's what a stay-at-home D is, yes. Ask EDM if they need a good stay-at-home D.

So they need a defenseman who gets caved every night to help. 20% of his ice time is on the PK of a team who’s coach said they couldn’t kill a penalty to save their lives. This would be peak Edmonton to make a trade like this.

If Senko could be had for a reasonable price, I think that would be a great move.

According to your source, this is the only deal that is close:

Feb. 23, 2018: Derick Brassard from Ottawa to Pittsburgh (through Vegas)
Third-party broker: Golden Knights
Pick received: 2018 4th Round Pick
Salary cap space retained: $2 million
Real cash cost: $462,366

The Kane retention would be just over $600k, there's no precedent to suggest that brings a 2nd and a player.

$600K is for the remaining of the season (or about 20 games of $2.625M).

I just looked it up. Kane's salary this year is just $2.9M for the entire season. If Monreal is taking on 25% of that for 22% of the season, then they're being asked to pay Kane just $159,500. That, according to the link you posted, is worth a 5th or 6th round pick.

I rest my case, LOL.

It's based on AAV, not the actual salary for this season

No, it's based on actual salary for the season. The $4M bonus was paid in the summer, so that doesn't get prorated into the season.

The actual cash owed to Kane by the Canadiens in this scenario is $159,500. That's worth a 5th round pick tops.

Look again at the link YOU posted.

LOL, you didn't even read the article you posted a link to:

"Armed with this data, we can tell you that historically, the real cash cost to buy a draft pick by acting as a third-party broker is somewhere in the neighborhood of:

4th Round Pick: $350,000
5th Round Pick: $185,000
6th Round Pick: $125,000

Given that the Carolina Hurricanes paid $833,333 in real cash dollars to take on Patrick Marleau’s contract in 2019, which brought them the 2020 No. 13 overall pick (Seth Jarvis), we can attempt to estimate the value of these picks in real cash cost:

1st Round Pick: $800,000+
2nd Round Pick: $650,000
3rd Round Pick: $500,000
4th Round Pick: $350,000
5th Round Pick: $185,000
6th Round Pick $125,000
7th Round Pick: $100,000<
"

Real cash cost is referenced repeatedly.
