Trading our best offensive D to get a scoring winger for Barzal is filling one hole by creating another huge one. You're extending a 31-year-old Mayfield at double his salary to move up the lineup (and creating an offensive black hole of a pair with him and Romanov) and you're getting a 34 year old Luke Schenn to fill in at RD3 - that's a huge downgrade for the second and third pairs. There's also the fact that it doesn't make a ton of sense to target a guy who primarily plays center if you're trying to get a winger for Barzal - you're going to pay a premium for a center versus a winger - if you offered this package to the Panthers for Matt Tkachuk they'd say yes before you got through listing all the picks you're giving up.
I'd argue this team is, at best, basically the same as if you ran it back with what they have this year instead. The top line is better, sure - but the rest of the bottom 9 is identical, save for being a year older. If Beauvillier was getting 1st round picks offered for him, he would've been out the door already; at best, you're getting a mid-round pick and a prospect out of him if you're lucky - so you've basically given up your 1sts in the next two drafts, plus a 2nd rounder this year, and your best forward prospect, to turn Josh Bailey & Noah Dobson into Elias Pettersen. As good as he is, it's an absolutely awful deal for the Islanders.
