At that point, Detroit might as well keep Osterle. Zero incentive for us.

Ovchinnikov holds no value for Detroit. Give us a 4th round pick for Oesterle and he's yours.

I think the value to get Laughton appears to be fair, based on values from past NHL deadlines. Is he really want the Leafs need for the second line? Many experts feel they need someone who drives offensive play. I think Laughton is a good player and adds a physicality that many fans want the Leafs to continue to add for the playoffs, but he does not help with top-6 scoring.

Same with O'Reilly. I find it interesting that the MSM have information leaked about ROR to Toronto. My gut is that STL leaked this information intentionally as the MSM are always looking for news related to the Leafs. Their hope would be that this drives up the talk and price on ROR. I don't think the Leafs are interested.

Someone who “drives offensive play” on the 2nd line? Laughton (or other) would be playing with Mitch / JT or Willy / JT - pretty much no one available (including Meier) drives play more than those guys. I think they need an intelligent, quick player that can keep up - preferably one with a bit of size and grit (Bunting 2.0). Laughton could be the guy.
Maybe for 3C they want someone who can drive play like ROR; Leafs should be interested.
TDL will be fascinating (like it always is); I have a feeling it’ll be more of a buyer’s market but 🤷

Agree with both of you.

Laughton is interesting, because of injuries hes playing 18+ minutes a night in PHI, and is on pace for a second career year in a row offensively, (but bear in mind that PHI is one of the worst offensive teams in the NHL and it balances out). Laughton produces on PP, PK and ES, plays all 3 positions and is a gritty, physical, leadership guy.

I think hes perfect for 2LW as he does the board work, defensively responsible, crash the net, which is not Tavares or Nylanders skillset. Hes signed for 3mil for 3 more yrs, so its a nice long term solution as well.

If they can keep kerfoot and get ROR and Jarnkrot on that 3rd line, thats pretty dangerous

Temo Mier is what they need, and he would be a pure rental because they cant afford him and they could recoup some assets with his rfa rights.

Detroit passes.

And you're nearly $5,400,000 over the salary cap. So not going to work.

Yes, theyd have to put somebody on LTIR until the playoffs to make it work, but then theres 15 forwards and 8 dmen dressed above, so send Holmberg and simmonds down, maybe dont make the play for oesterle and drop engvall as a salary dump would do it.

But ultimately TB has done it twice recently (and CHI beforfe them) of having an injured player stay slightly longer on LTIR than necessary if you believe them, or just saying a player is injured.
