1.
VAN
  1. Karlsson, Erik
Additional Details:
Would this work for the skeleton of the trade? Two players doing well in this point of their careers with big contracts. No retention on Karlsson saves some cap space for San Jose even when Millers extension kicks in. Less term for the Canucks and an elite swedish d-man seems to make some sort of sense imo.
2.
TOR
  1. Horvat, Bo ($2,750,000 retained)

Disregarding this trade proposal itself, I think one point that no one's yet pointed out with regard to the Merkley trade to COL is that between Burns and now Merks getting traded, this likely signals that Erik Karlsson is to stay in San Jose (unless absolutely blown away by an offer a la 3 1st round picks and minimal retention).

If the plan was to trade Karlsson, they would've told that to Ryan and kept him and played him in EK65's spot.

If a team offered to take Karlsson for free, the sharks would be over the moon.

Nah.

Dubas isn't interested in trading a 1st and two prospects for a couple of rentals. If Horvat comes with an extension then maybe, but Meier would be a better fit on this team.

I feel like he might because his job is or should be on the line.

Yea, but Shanahan gets a vote, and I don't think he'll allow Dubas to make risky, short-term trades. Dubas himself is very cautious when making moves. He's only going to trade multiple valuable assets for guys with term.

Can the leafs afford an extension on him? Im not really up to date with their cap situation going into next season.

If Horvat wants 8 million a year, or even a little more, then the Leafs could make it work. The question is do they want Horvat? He plays a similar, offensive-minded game as the core four. The Leafs desperately need a power forward who can play more physical, and Horvat doesn't fit that description.

I think Colorado or Carolina would be better landing spots for Horvat.

Disagree, I think he very much would trade a late first, 1 promising looking prospect and 1 prospect who more than likely wont be an NHLer for a top 6 forward. Why wouldnt he? No brainer to me. Doesnt even have to lose their best prospect or meaningful roster players. Major upgrade to your scoring for the playoffs. Really hed be stupid not to at this price.

Because Horvat doesn't guarantee a playoff round win. If that package were for Patrick Kane, a clutch playoff performer who is still a game breaker, then it would make sense. He's worth that price, Horvat isn't.

No one guarentees you playoff success. All it does it upgrade your team. And youre doing that in a big way here

Besides last year Mcdavid couldn't even guarentee the Oilers playoff success. Its a built up team that will get you there.

Disagree. Leafs already have their top two centers. Tavares is too slow to go to the wing and Horvat is too good to be played on a third line. The Leafs need a top six winger, hopefully they get someone like Meier or Kane. Horvat has been a great goal scorer this season, he'd definitely help the team, but he just doesn't fit this team.

I wouldnt say the trading of Merkley is an indication of anything, he asked to be traded

I would replace Minten with someone else. I think I would trade Knies over Minten. He's going to be very good I think

Knies is gonna be so much better in my opinion and I think a lot of leafs fans would back me up on that. Not saying Minten isn't gonna be good cause he very well will be but Knies is a different breed.

Leafs management doesnt think that, so I'll trust their opinion on this one. I havent seen Minten play a full game before and only seen Knies about 5 full games. Only thing I know is that Kamloops is STACKED and I think he probably benefits from that a lot

Meier is likely harder to retain than Horvat. I agree Meier is the better add but I don't see anyway we keep him beyond this season. ROR is my choice.

I think the thing with Knies is his ceiling is so high but I think his floor is way lower than most think. If he hits his potential and fits in the top 6, that's huge to have a 30 goal scoring power forward. But I think it's an equal chance he becomes a capable but not very productive 3rd liner. Minten I see being Kampf but also will have seasons of 60-70 points with Selke nominations. He already looked NHL good defensively at training camp. Had he not hurt his wrist I bet he really would have turned heads. Dubas wanted him in the first round but felt he would still be there at 13 picks later. He dumped Mrazek for Minten!

Karlsson wants to win, not play on a bad Canucks team.

And that offer for Bo Horvat, Will be on the bottom of the best offer he'll get.

He's their defensive matchup centre and still scores, I got a buddy in Kamloops and he watches him often. He's legit a great prospect going completely under the radar. Totally fine by me!

Minten is a guy I wouldn't move if it can be helped, Knies as well but if I had to pick between the two I would keep Minten I think

Be on the top end of the returns if hes a rental. Canucks have potential to get good within 2 years with their core so that might urge him. Also another star swede in Petterson could convince him to waive.

I think a centre is never a bad thing to have. Really opens up a lot of different looks depending on how the game is unfolding. Horvat certainly isn't my favorite potential target by any means but let's just imagine how that would look. Just for fun.

I think you would start out with him as the 3C and give him Engvall and Whoever, give them easier matchups and let them get offensive, I bet it would be a pretty big net benefit and if we need to shorten the bench in a tight game, he slides up to play with JT to get some extra offensive oomph going and Kampf works with Engvall and Jarnkrock or Holmberg or whoever wins the spot to get the harder defensive zone starts. It's undeniably a more potent lineup and may not sacrifice much defensively if Keefe can get him acclimatized quickly.

As I have mentioned I think ROR would be the better add because he would improve the offence and defence of the bottom 6 and again could slide up when we need a goal. Sure makes awesome matchup problems for the other team.

And hopefully Knies blows up.

The very last thing the Canucks need to do, is add a $11,500,000 RHD for the next 4.5 years. While he's having an awesome season now. This contract will not age well at the end.
