With that said I don't see what trading them helps anyone. It will be the same problem where ever they go, has to do what Crosby did (take less) to win a cup.

Gretzky was sold, not traded. Pocklington needed the money and McNall obliged by paying him $15M in addition to the generous trade package that he returned. The entire payroll for the Oilers at the time was $7.5M. If Edmonton was struggling to make payroll and AEG was allowed to offer up 2x the team's annual payroll ($165M) in return for McDavid, then I'm sure we'd see a McDavid trade.

Since that's not allowed any longer, you're not going to see a trade for the best player of the generation. There is no return that would be good enough for McDavid that wouldn't result in Holland getting chased out of Edmonton and having his Canadian citizenship revoked. Pocklington says he still gets death threats for trading Gretzky 30+ years later.

Likewise, any GM that gutted their pipeline to send a package worthy of McDavid would be crippling their team and would lead to their immediate firing. McDavid has proven over the past 8 years that a single player can't carry a team to a Stanley Cup, so putting all your eggs in one basket is a terrible idea.
