Trading McLeod and Wood forcing Ruff to stop ruining the lineup with them

Created by: Tintin
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 3, 2023
Published: Feb. 3, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If Poile is contemplating a retool I'd love for the Devils to check in on Ekholm.

Johnsson to make the cap work in the Meier deal.
The pick and Casey are the big pieces coming to the Sharks, McLeod meets the supposed 'roster forward' criteria (I guess Johnsson achieves that to).

Wood has been slumping but McLeod has been fine...even has had some strong games lately.
I don't think either have a ton of trade value.
We need one line to play heavy, put pressure on opponents defense.
It makes the other lines better.
And not something that shows up much on any stat.

I say keep Wood through season, extend McLeod.

Can't tell if compliment or insult.
It is a bit chilly where I am at to be fair so I suppose you have a point there.

I don't see it.
Wood and McLeod have all the tools to be playing heavy, but they are doing the complete opposite.
These last 15 games they haven't been hard for the opposition to play against in the slightest.
In my view, they are responsible for putting more pressure on the other lines to make up for their own shortcomings.
I don't see them bringing anything in terms of juju or spirit to team either.
The Devils are better off without them.

Boqvist and Zetterlund does achieve in putting pressure on opponents defense.
They are the ones capable of getting results by forechecking and being difficult to play against.
The skillsets of Boqvist, Zetterlund, Bastian and Haula make the other lines better.

Not into Ekholm at all. He’s a great player but the term on his contract doesn’t fit what we need. His contract could become a serious problem especially if we are also looking to extend Bratt. I’d rather get a guy like Brendan Dillon in Winnipeg who has an extra year on his deal so he doesn’t inadvertently block Luke from a top 4 spot.

Getting Ekholm in would do a lot of things for the Devils.
It'd make them better now as he'd push Smith out of the lineup.
Ekholm also negates the need to resign Graves to what I'd imagine being a rather problematic contract in its own right.
Ekholm has the benefit of being rather easily moveable in 2024 or 2025 when Nemec develop past him (and possibly guys like Vilén, Orlov and Edwards).

If this deal were to go down, I'd want the Devils to set the 23/24 defence up like this:
Siegenthaler - Hamilton
Hughes - Marino
Ekholm - Walsh
// Smith
