This squad is underrated

Created by: Islesforthecup
Team: 2023-24 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 8, 2023
Published: Feb. 8, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Idk who might be interested in wahlstrom so I picked a random team.
As for RW1 he’s not a 1st line caliber player but they need someone in that spot who can win puck battles and funnel pucks to the net. He doesn’t have Wally’s upside but his floor is higher and he fits the line better.
The d-pairs could be a bunch of different combos mostly depending on left side development. 3-6 28-8 4-24,
3-6 4-8 28-24, or 3-8 28-6 4-24.
There aren’t really any big changes but I think with some LHD progression and hopefully a fit with 13/14 this team can make a run. Also Bailey is still on this roster so if you’d want to make a bigger acquisition you can open up 5m without detracting from the team.

Yes he can tho he wouldn’t go to NYR (even if that is a very intriguing fit) bc isles rags won’t ever trade

I'd take Wally just for his shot alone.

Well I can't offer this year's 1st because with some lottery luck (yeah right) that pick could be Bedard or Fantilli. I'm sure Lou will be looking for a '23 1st. So I doubt there's a trade to be made here unfortunately. ☹️

Keep Wally, he looked good before getting hurt and is probably done for the year (one of the beat reporters noted he was on crutches with a full leg brace in the press box last night), so you can probably extend him for a cheap 1-2 year deal. The only deal I'm considering is if you're swapping him out for another younger player who might need a change of scenery (thinking someone like Podkolzin in Vancouver or Tomasino in Nashville) - otherwise, keep him on a short bridge deal and see how he comes back from injury next year.

Dufour’s biggest weakness is puck battles, in the Q last season he ranked as one of the worst forwards in puck battle win %

He was one of the isles most efficient 5v5 producers and well above defensively before his injury . If he was made available smart GMs like sakic/brisbios would be all over it, hes already a 2nd line caliber forward at 5v5.

I'm super bummed it looks like he's done for the year, with the way Barzal & Horvat have gelled so fast I would've loved to see him in Bailey's spot on the other wing. The only silver lining, if you wanna call it that, is that I think they can get him re-signed a little cheaper this summer if he doesn't come back before the end of the year and light it up.

I think he’ll get 2 mill x 2, slightly lower than what Beau got after his entry level deal

I’ve seen enough of Wally to move him now before he loses more value. He’s a player who needs a very specific role and linemates and the isles can’t offer that. He doesn’t really fit with 13/14 bc his poor skating and worse hockey IQ mean he never gets himself open off the puck. Dufour fits much better at RW1 and I wouldn’t break up 2 middle 6 lines that have both consistently looked good. I’d rather just pick up a 1st and maybe another piece or so and let him go somewhere else. And if he ever becomes a 30 goal scorer I’m fine with that bc I highly doubt he becomes that with NYI

If he never gets open off the puck then why do the most basic stats go against that statement?

I’m also fine with moving him because it’s a near guarantee he’ll break out almost anywhere else .

Dufour is a worse skater than Wahlstrom and he doesn’t have the two way game wahlstrom has either. Dufour will likely be a PP specialist who will be passable at evens in a bottom 6 role

i wouldnt want to give the picks up for him just due to this years draft, could land something just as good if not better imo. he would be an interesting fit for sure. But yea, the rangers wont ever trade with them tho sadly.

Yeah and bolduc will top out at a #5 dman right? I’m done with your ignorant prospect takes.
Also what basic stats exactly say that wahlstrom gets open for shots? I notice you didn’t provide any

I still stand by that, Bolduc is a decent two way player. Nothing that he’s done so far would indicate he’ll be much more than that. What stats/ prospect analysis has him as more than a good 3rd pair D?

Wahlstrom ranks top 3 among isles in individual scoring chances for per 60 and he leads the team in individual shots per 60. If he wasn’t getting open, he wouldn’t lead the team in multiple offensive category. You should learn the game man. Your eye test is lacking.

Wahlstrom’s on pace for 16 goals over 82 games playing 1st line the whole year. And his S% is right at his career average. This is unfortunately what he is, a guy who doesn’t drive play all that well, spams shots every time he touches the puck regardless of how bad the shot is OR what other plays are available. His skating ⬇️ hockey IQ ⬇️ playmaking ⬇️ shot ⬆️⬆️ but when his only plus grade is his shot (and pretty much everything else is below average) and he’s only on pace for 16 goals it doesn’t look very promising. I’d love to be wrong on this and have him turn into a 1st line W and perennial 30 goal scorer. I just think that’s extremely unlikely.

The reason I think the rangers would be a good fit is bc they need top 6 RW help and if he could figure it out he’d look great with panarin and trocheck. He’d also be very cheap cap wise for a team that’s in quite the crunch.

Panarin and mika* unless he slots in on line 3 with kreider and trochek, which trust me, gallant would so bury that kid hahahaha.

Wahlstrom doesn’t control his ice time and he was not on the 1st line. He was playing bottom 6 minutes. Only Nelson has produced at a higher rate at 5v5. His playmaking is actually very good, he wouldn’t have as many assists as he does without it, there are multiple high end plays I can pull up that shows he’s at worst an average playmaker.

Everything you said is your opinion of him. But the numbers just doesn’t support it, basic or advanced stats.

He’d also be very cheap cap wise for a team that’s in quite the crunch.

      another below average pass

Yeah this definitely looks like below average playmaking. Please find me something that shows wahlstrom is below average.
