Yeah, if Dubas ever did offer this and I'm AZ, I'm running with that.

i'm shocked dubas hasn't offered that considering he was gonna do two 1sts + knies for hagel/fleury last season

This is a best case scenario for AZ if they are trading with the Leafs. I dont think this is quite on the table though.

I suspect if Knies is included then Sandin stays, or Knies stays and its something like Sandin+Voit or Sandin+Robertson instead.

Knies/Sandin/1st probably beats a Boston offer of Grzcelyk/Lohrei/1st... word is that Byfield and Clarke aren't being moved which is a little confusing because I can't think of what other pieces ARZ would be interested in. Turcotte is a bust and probably doesn't move the needle much for ARZ.

you're right but by all reports the negotiations were getting close. if toronto had no interest in moving knies dubas wouldn't have been so pissed that their asking price leaked

too much to give up. Might be able to stomach losing 1 of Sandin or Knies. Not both.

Top F prospect
23yr old top 6 D-man, with control
1st round pick
Bottom 6 RFA

probably true but if i'm dubas i'd be all in on chychrun. imo we need 2.5 years of him far more than 0.5 years of meier. depth scoring should be a far greater priority than top 6 scoring imo, like do we really need 5 ppg forwards to get out of the first round?

He wasn't going to do that, that was the ask from Davidson. If he was going to do that the trade would have been done. Fleury was traded for a conditional 2nd that upgraded to a 1st and Hagel was traded and Hagel+two 4ths were traded for two 1sts+Katchouk+Raddysh.

He's going to cost 6-8.5m to resign, plus he only plays in 60% of his games and he's only 24. It's a high risk to pay that steep price and the Leafs don't have a ton of futures. Worth noting that the big 4 could all choose to leave in FA in the next couple of years too.

First of all, Knies was less valuable last year simply due to one less year of development. He has now shown promise at the NCAA level over two seasons as well as at the USHL level.

Second of all, what you left out of last years trade rumor is that CHI was going to take Mrazek's cap in this trade as well. Dubas ended up moving Mrazek for very little, all things considered, but at the time the rumors were that it may take a 1st just to move his contract (similar to Marleau).

With eveything else that has changed since last season, I dont think this specific trade would interest the Leafs this year, but I have been wrong before. Especially when we consider that the hope is that Sandin turns into a Chychrun level player over the next 2-3 seasons.

can't be afraid of trading for a guy with 2.5 years left because of what his next contract will cost. here's the thing: matthews and willy will both only be commanding 2-3m raises each at most and by all accounts the cap could be $10m higher by 2025, combine that with jt's $11m coming off the books when marner's due for a new deal and there's plenty of room for chychrun. not to mention the fact that if chychrun actually plays well enough to earn #1d money and rielly keeps stagnating, we could either try paying a premium to get rid of the deal or buy him out

I think Fleury was more as insurance for Campbell who was shaky in the second half but there was a time around TDL that he was playing hurt.

I remember Dubas saying that he was confident that Mrazek would find his game around that time as well. So, him being in that trade shows that they gave up on him. If you remember they ended up having to waive Mrazek and sign some goalie.

I kept hearing Vilardi from LA over the last few weeks.

Something like Vilardi + Turcotte + 2x 1st round picks would almost certainly get it done imo.

now la's messing with the deal though trying to dump petersen and bring in vejmelka too. if dubas doesn't circle back around and offer this deal it's a big mistake imo

He will likely only play 1.5 years, so they do need to be afraid if they are paying for 2.5 years.

The Leafs can afford to sign all 4 of them, but if any of them wanted they can walk. I could see both Matthews and Nylander walking, as for Marner and Tavares, they are probably Leafs for the rest of their careers. Chychrun too could walk as well.

My point is the Leafs have might have a good prospect pool but it's very shallow, and you want them to deal their top prospect + a 1st + a young D-man with a cheap contract for a guy that would be a great upgrade, but might not play much at all.

The Leafs are better off keeping both Knies and Sandin because of the value their contracts will bring the Leafs. Next two years, will be challenging until Tavares 11m is reduced. If they can have Chychrun for Robertson+Niemela+two 1sts, then that's something they should consider.

We have no idea what "Close" means in this context. Dubas could have agreed to everything except Knies and was working on including a different prospect(s) before the deal fell through.

By all accounts, the Leafs and Dubas are very high on Knies and are almost unwilling to part ways with him unless the return is significant. By most accounts Knies is a top 25 prospect in the NHL overall and in a shallow prospect pool, such as what the Leafs have, he is even more valuable of an asset to have.
