Korpisalo

Created by: matt59
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 19, 2023
Published: Feb. 19, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
For this season especially, it just makes too much sense for the leafs to get a quality depth goalie option. With Murray and Samsonov having had injuries at various points, acquiring Korpisalo who’s been a rare bright spot on a horrendous jackets team would be a useful pickup.

With everything on the line this year it’s not worth the risk of not having that goaltending option, and it would be quite the redemption story of Korpisalo was part of what got Toronto over the hump instead of being what stopped them from a playoff series win

Leaves enough cap and roster space for once Murray returns as well assuming he’s back before end of season

Saros is a target likely as well w/ NSH tanking since 2015 or so...

I’d imagine Saros will cost an arm, leg, vital organs, and a fat stack of cash to acquire though

It’d be an all time TDL or even draft deal that’s for sure

Why would the Leafs acquire a genuinely terrible goaltender?

If saaros is available the Leafs should open the cupboard. He's a franchise goalie

If you think Korpisalo is “genuinely a terrible goalkeeper”, respectfully you need to get your eyes checked. He’s the only reason Columbus doesn’t have a 15 point lead in the sweepstakes for first overall

Saros would cost you something really painful. Like, Nylander+.

Hey, nothing off me - but TML have an issue in goal - 110%.
What it takes for JS, I don't know, but suffice to say the real GM better at least ask!!?

He is literally the worst goalie by both save percentage and goals against average for those with over 150 NHL gp since he entered the league. Literally last place for both. He's genuinely a really and goaltender

Yeah he's playing like a league average goaltender this year. But I'll go by his career where he's been awful. Literally the worst goalie with 150+ games played since he entered the league.

he's got a .912 SV% this year despite playing in front of one of the worst defenses in the league (he's been *averaging* 34+ shots against per start this year). I don't think you're wrong saying that he's had his issues the past few seasons, but put him on a halfway decent squad this year and we'd be talking about how great his turnaround has been. This is a pretty light price to pay for a guy that would be a solid upgrade over Kallgren/Woll as Matt Murray insurance.

I'm going to trust his 208 games over his 20 odd games this year. The truth is any goalie who is good enough to play more than 10 games in the NHL is likely good enough to get hot for a while. I have zero faith that his performance this year represents some true improvement vs him just getting hot. I have no issue acquiring someone to be a third stringer as both kallgren and woll leave a fair bit to be desired. But I wouldn't gamble on him

I’m not trying to say Korpi is a top 10 NHL goalie or that the leafs should extend him… but there’s a ton of missing context behind these numbers. League average is .905 sv% (per hockey reference) this season. Korpi at .913 as of tonight. Above average there. +5.7 goals saved above expected (Jeremy Swayman is at +7.09 and Carter Hart at +5.35, and Linus Ullmark leads the league at +31.52 for context, Spencer Martin league worst at -28.53, all per hockey reference).

Career wise there’s been no denying he’s had an up and down career… the past two years he looked awful and played awful in net. 2019-20 he was the best goalie we had and an NHL all Star.
The down years were primarily due to injury but he just looked fundamentally awful in net those years. Out of position, slow, sloppy.

This year has been starkly different. He’s stayed healthy, he’s much more sound positionally and sharp in his movements in the crease. Visually he *looks* so much better in the crease. This years numbers reflect that. And that’s while been being on a truly atrocious team. My jackets couldn’t defend their way out of a wet paper bag this year.

So while his career numbers aren’t anything impressive, his play is noticeably different, he’s stayed healthy, and he’s been a difference maker. I’d say for goalie insurance for a team who *must* win a playoff series a third and late round pick is a reasonable bet for a guy who has been extremely sharp this year.
