Mock trade deadline from The Hockey Writers

Created by: ColonelX
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 20, 2023
Published: Feb. 20, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description

Trades
MTL
  1. Gurianov, Denis
  2. Khudobin, Anton
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
Gurianov is a low-risk / high-reward player, as the Habs can let him walk away as a UFA if he doesn’t show signs of improvement. Worst case scenario, Gurianov becomes a filler for a roster decimated by injuries and continues to underperform, which will keep the Canadiens low in the standings. In a best-case scenario, he becomes a viable and inexpensive third-line winger.
Khudobin would give the Canadiens a veteran goaltender to support Cayden Primeau, especially if Kevin Poulin remains injured.
DAL
  1. Hoffman, Mike
Additional Details:
Dropping Khudobin’s $2.2 million and Gurianov’s $2.9 million as a pending restricted free agent (RFA) would make the Stars fully capable of absorbing Hoffman’s $4.5 million salary without Hughes retaining any. It would also give Dallas nearly $1 million in cap space at the deadline to add another player if they see fit. That sounds like a great deal for the Stars and brings some help to Montreal.

I think every Habs fan would love to see this happen, just don't think Dallas would consider Hoffman enough of an upgrade to take on Hoffman.

If they miss out on other players and Hoffman becomes their fall back, sure but a long shot

Stars have no need for Mike Hoffman

I'd argue that they do need secondary scoring (Hoffman or any other trade bait) considering they're midle of the pack for goals per game and PP%. Olofsson and Karlström didn't move the needle much in their short stints while Kiviranta, Faksa and Glendening didn't do much all year. I see where THW are coming from by suggesting this trade, Dallas doesn't own their 1st and 3rd this year while having next to none cap space so they're out of any big name rentals. Puljujärvi could be an option but Edmonton won't take back cap so to me they'd be looking at guys like Hoffman, Barbashev and Lafferty, althought the two latter might come at a slight premium considering it'd be an intra division trade.

Montreal would have to take Faksa to make the long term cap work. Even if you swapped Fox for Dobby I’d still rather keep the second. We need somebody that can create and drive play for Segs and Marchie. Not a power play pylon
