This is a big what if as it's unlikely he doesn't re-up on a shorter term deal. However looking at it as a hypothetical... LA, Chicago, Vegas and NY. Basically any big American markets. LA is a good spot as they are going to be competitive for a long time, and if money is going out the door can afford him.

Obviously this trade is off since all they get is an aging center and late picks, but the idea is correct. I assume it's Byfield, Clarke, Vilardi and multiple firsts. It would be one of the biggest trades in nhl history.

If he doesn't sign an extension around July 1 then it will be a massive story. Toronto cannot let him be an own rental, so I'm excited to see what happens.

The base would be your top 2 prospects and your next 3 firsts and 2 young roster players that can be immediately inserted into our lineup

LA won't deal Kopitar either as the roster player.

This is so bad for LA. Just wait a year and sign Matthews for free. Another scenario which makes sense, if the Leafs decide to see at the 2024 TDL, trade Matthews (his cap won't matter), Kings could go on a Cup run with Koptitar, Kings resign Matthews and Matthews can get his eight years. and Kopitar 10m cap will be gone.

Certainly Koptitar and his 7 teams trade list is a factor. But if I was Leaf GM....I'd take that trade all day long....go into sell mode with Nylander, Brodie, Kopitar during the 23/24 season. Have lots of cap in the summer of 2024,, and lots of futures.

Yeah that trade is definitely not happening. LA can just sign him if he ever reaches UFA and he’s willing to sign in LA which I would bet money he would.
