Call It What It Is - A Rebuild

Description
Sure Ovi does not want a rebuild, sure he's mad Orlov is gone. Sure GMBM can promise "no rebuild during the Ovechkin era." But let's be honest that when Ovi, Backstrom, Oshie, and others are gone there cannot be a scorched earth of prospects, picks, and rising stars in DC. Now that they are definitely NOT a playoff team or a threat to challenge even if they were playing close to the other 5-6 possible playoff teams...would be a good opportunity to turn UFAs and other assets into a pipeline of talent or picks.

Shed some salary to re-sign Gus and Fehervary, or maybe jump Iorio to NHL...either way this creates a fast, albeit small 4th line...for now...and gets McMichael some ice time at 3LW and as psuedo-3C to help the slowed down Backstrom. Strome deserves 2C for how well he plays.
Trades
1.
WSH
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (WPG)
2.
WSH
  1. 2023 3rd round pick (PIT)
LAK
  1. Johansson, Marcus
Additional Details:
A better depth forward than Eller, more versatile IMO and cheaper overall. Maybe a 4th rounder is better return, but I'll get saucy here.
3.
WSH
  1. Chychrun, Jakob
  2. 2023 6th round pick (ARI)
ARI
  1. Johansen, Lucas
  2. Mantha, Anthony
  3. 2023 1st round pick (BOS)
  4. 2023 2nd round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Caps add a conditional 2nd rounder as well based on an extension w/ Chick.
4.
WSH
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (EDM)
EDM
  1. Jensen, Nick
  2. 2023 4th round pick (WSH)
5.
WSH
  1. 2023 3rd round pick (BUF)
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (VGK)
  3. 2025 4th round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
2024 Draft swap probably is less than 12-15 picks between VGK 2nd and a WPG 3rd. NAK is value of a future 4th at best given he was a waiver claim. TvR plus a future consideration brings back a 2nd.
VGK
  1. Aubé-Kubel, Nicolas
  2. van Riemsdyk, Trevor
  3. 2024 3rd round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Caps add a future consideration (prospect)

I think Eller at most gets a 4 or 5, We would need at least another first equivlent for Chychrun so either the Boston first or Mcmichael/Lappiere/Miroshenko and think Jensen could fetch a first given Orlov was basically a 1&2

No this is not a rebuild...it's very clearly a re-tool. Two very different things...

Would you call it a re-build if you don't re-sign Sheary, Smith, Irwin, let Hags expire (on LTIR), no plan to try again w/ Connor Brown and restock with Iorio and another prospect D down the road? Or does rebuild imply shed Oshie sooner, and others are not long term like Snively, etc?

It's only really considered a rebuild when you start trading your core pieces. Kuzy, Wilson, Backy, Oshie, Carlson, even Ovi.

Kuzy is only likely trade "value". Wilson is a future Captain and not in play. All the others closer to retirement...Carlson a wildcard. You never know with him.

In this market (and who knows what it is, now, after the Jeannot mystery), you could well get a third for both Eller and Johansson, but neither is of interest to a team building on youth which has 16 forwards on the roster already, with promotable kids in Ontario in case of need. (Eller when we have Kopitar, Danault, Byfield, Kupari and Lizotte is clearly surplus, and Johansson when we have Fiala, Kempe, Moore, Arvidsson, Iafallo, VIlardi and Kaliyev is particularly redundant.)
