retaining 3m for 4 years is the deal breaker here. If it was around 500k maybe they'd take it. But I don't expect a McCabe style retention of this caliber of player unless its a serious overpay

Yeah the value is fine but not the retention. Coyotes aren't doing that.

. . . and note that he's owed $8.15 million AAV ($24.45 million) for the last three years of his contract (i.e., well in excess of his cap hit).

I thought I heard Schmaltz doesn't play much C these days and the Avs need a guy that can play 2C. If that's the case, they can't justify making a trade for Schmaltz
