interesting trade i dont know how debrincat has played this year but would be a nice addition to the top 6 on paper. what i love about yzerman is that he really doesn't have any bad contracts outside of chiarot.

I think Detroit would have to also send a guy like Bergerren or another second or something for Ottawa to consider

I don’t hate it, but we’re not getting Cat for that cheap. And we can’t go into next year with Hellberg backup again.

Too much term and $$$$ for Severson and Gudas. Gotta think of the cap in 24/25 and beyond with some expensive RFA to sign. Is DeBrincat an 8m player?

a) DeBrincat is going to cost more than 8M a year. if that's all that he would take, then there's 0% chance the Sens would trade him
b) a mid first, an early-mid 2nd, and a guy considerably worse to replace him isn't even close anyways. just patently lower than what the Sens gave up for him in the first place

This is a similar return to what Ottawa gave Chicago for the Cat though. You guys gave up a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, so in my trade Kubalik replaces the 3rd, which seems appropriate.

What's wrong with Hellberg as a backup?

Too much money and term, well welcome to free agency. You have to overpay a bit, and maybe give an extra year or 2 if you are serious about acquiring players. I just think it's obvious we need more grit and toughness, so Gudas would help with that, as would Austin Watson (he's from Michigan, could be a nice fit, although I know Ottawa likes him).

Not sure how Ottawa fits DeBrincat at, let's say 8.5 per....also, this is basically the package you sent Chicago for DeBrincat, and it's not like he's lighting it up this year, so his value has remained similar. Take out Kubalik and add a B prospect if you want, but the value isn't as far off here as you are making it to be.

Ottawa isnt selling for futures. It would be a hockey trade if anything. But very likely Ottawa resigns cat

If you want to sign a FA that's the best available at his position - you're going to have to pay. I'd actually guess at EITHER more money or term for Severson. Yes, DeBrincat is an $8M player.

That was the 7OA pick, season and lottery had already happened. It's less. Ottawa can make $8.5M work without too much trouble. They were paying $3.6M for Hamonic, that's almost a wash for Chychrun, Talbot is off the books @ $3.6M...... Whether that puts them in trouble with Sanderson, Pinto & Greig in a coupe years or not, that's another question. But only Giroux has a NMC, they could trade anyone to fix it.

This is better than most of what I see. I’m sick of rebuilding to rebuild all over again.

7th overall pick vs 13th or later overall pick is significant. and the Sens wouldn't be going off getting guys without the plans to be able to keep DeBrincat around
