What I Wish Had Happened

Description
Chicago traded Jake McCabe with 50% retention and Sam Lafferty to Toronto for a 2025 first, a 2026 second and two "prospects." Suppose we had offered a 2024 first (one year earlier than the Toronto first) and a 2025 second (one year earlier than the Toronto second) for McCabe alone.

Chicago would get to keep Lafferty (or sell him somewhere else) and earlier draft picks. We would get to keep our 2023 first instead of our 2024 first and would have two more seasons of McCabe at a much cheaper cap hit than having the trouble of having to re-sign Gavrikov (no sure thing) at a much higher cap hit.

There are some quality prospects at RW, LD and G clustered around the 23rd overall slot in many 2023 mock drafts that I would love to see on the Kings Reserve List. Our lack of that draft pick may have an unfortunate cascading effect on the rest of the draft and the off-season.

If you want to argue that exchanging Jonathan Quick for Joonas Korpisalo was a good move, fine, make whatever deal you want; but the actual trade wasn't financially necessary and in fact could have serious negative long-term financial effects.

I wish the Kings would have traded for Hellberg, who’s been very good on a cheap deal.

You got the better deal as it doesnt come with term.
LAK is changing the guard up until Doughty 's deals done .
At this point i doubt Roy or Walker get new deals as Clarke , Durzi and soon Spence will all be pushing them out.

Their Left D is a a little light , true
But Its cheaper paying for a rental then paying someone to take a contract you signed and will regret .
If anyone i woulda targeted Sandin as he was a beyond perfect complementary player for LAK
TML needed him to be more then he was. LAK needs him simply to be a 2nd pair Defensman who can cover Durzi so he can jump up on the rush.
Someone who's confident and capable enough to threat passes and spring Durzi loose on a couple breakaways.

I get TML is sore about giving up Durzi a RD they so desperatly need even now.
But LAK coulda paid a 1st and Grans getting the samed Value Gustafsson offers if not more in context to this playoff run (Longterm Grans >Gustfssson.
Gus cant be trusted we paid for him for our SCF run and him and Merril had to split ****s with either Weber/Petry of EG or Chiarot /Eddy for JM
We trusted them the first few games in TML almost got eliminated then we overworked our top 4 to compensate and 2/4 have been injury ridden since (one of them retiring early)

LAK woulda been a perfect fit
Plus having your 2nd pair as TML's 2018 1st and 2nd round picks would just be ultimate troll level if you win a cup with em

I'm fine with the trade the Kings made, I just don't think Quick should have been included at all. They have the cap space to carry 3 goaltenders and let Quick finish out the season in the team suite.

At the very least, the Kings should have approached Quick ahead of the deadline, told him they couldn't afford to keep him as the backup with his quality of play, and given him the option of finishing his contract in LA, or pursuing a trade. There was obviously a team involved in his services, and the Kings could have done better by Quick if they would have facilitated the trade with Vegas themselves. They still could have brought in Columbus to retain 50%.

Instead, Rob Blake looks like an a-hole and Kekalainen looks like the hero.
