Seems like a lose-lose tbh. EK could get more and Buffalo should only do this for 4+ mil retention. Everyone will be getting paid soon, so its best to get EKs deal down to 7-8 or so IMO

Buffalo seems like the last team that needs EK65 with Dahlin and Powers.

If anyone from the Sharks went there, I figure it'd be Couture.

No way Sharks would even get this for EK65, even with retention. Nobody is vying for that contract.

That’s not a bad cap hit to take. The cap is going up in 24-25 and we have a lot of room.

Nobody wants a 100 point defenseman at a proper cap hit for a discount return like it has here? Oh please, get out of here

This deal could have materialized already if it were the case, while he's a year younger, giving you another year of value on the contract. He's going to be paid until he's 37. Even though he's a pretty lauded player, this level of production isn't normal for him. He's shooting 4% higher than his average, when he was healthy. It doesn't make sense to look at his production this year absent of context, or to expect most of the years remaining of his deal to match this level of production, which is why it makes sense that there was only one team in on him this TDL. (EDM)

That's not to say that he isn't a great player, or that you look at the info above and not still take the chance regardless. Just that there aren't going to be so many suiters that you'd get close to this level of an offer. Realistically, you're going to talking about 1-2 teams total who this type of move is within the real of possibility.

Whose to say he won’t do this again? After all his injuries he’s stayed healthy this year and already has a career high in points this year. Likely will be the first dman to score 100 points in a season in 30 years. $9.5 mil for that is more than fair.

In this trade the sharks get a pick likely in the 20s, a pick in the 90ish range, an ahl goalie, a 4C, a 5th and a 6/7th dman. That’s a steal for Buffalo

The odds say that he won't do this again. He's shooting 11.5%. Josi got to 96 last year shooting 8.2%, so it's not that much more impressive what EK65 is doing. Everyone regresses from record years. Josi is closer to his average this year than where he was last year. Whether or not he does it again doesn't matter because the odds are against him, his history is against him, his age is against him, and most importantly his contract is against him. There are only a couple of teams that could theortically fit him in, nobody that will do it without retention, and not enough bidders to get more for him than probably a 1st and (since Greer likes qty) a few C/D prospects. What is really of value to SJ here is the 9.5m of cap space dealing him would free up.

Lol Karlsson on a bottom three team in the league putting up these numbers is way better than what Josi did on a playoff team last year. If what you suggest the sharks would get is true, San Jose just keeps him. Karlsson likes San Jose, the contract isn’t really an issue either as they won’t be good until it’s up.

With how bad of a job Grier has been doing, I do believe SJ ends up just keeping him. He might help sell tickets during this time, and it's understandable to keep him for those reasons, but If he found any deal at all that would free up even 8m in additional cap space, most GMs in his shoes would do it.
