Have you seen Nylander? If we bomb out in the first round again he’s not the one I’d trade.

That’s fine. Doesn’t really address my point. Contracts matter. McCann has more trade value than Nylander due to four years remaining at five million, vs one year at seven. That value here is ridiculous.

One of the top 10 wingers in the league will cost a lot regardless of term. If Nylander had more term he’s worth that easily. It’s not far off.

But he doesn’t. So it’s insanely far off.

Let’s just look at Meier. Also one year of term (albeit at the deadline. We can debate whether that timing has more or less value). Similar production to Nylander (with a lot less help). Actually has a better contractual situation since he was cheaper, retained on, and the devils have the ability if they so choose to retain his rights for another season.

Did that return a guy playing at over a 40 goal pace with 4x5 left on his deal, plus two other good roster players and a first round pick? Of course not. Because its ludicrous

The Meier trade was a bad trade done by a rebuilding team. We have no reason to make that trade given we aren’t rebuilding.

Winnipeg is giving up the only piece with any value. They say no.

Sure ya do - might not be able to keep the player long term. Get value for an expiring contract. Seattle on the other hand has no reason to trade McCann.

We can resign Nylander though, so it’s not a get nothing or get barely nothing scenario.

How do you know? Are you in there on the negotiations? You did say, “we,” so maybe you are. What if toronto doesn’t like the new number it would take? What if they don’t like the way their cap would project with it? What if it would make it impossible to sign matthews? What if he just doesn’t want to stay?

“What if” is a nice game we can play with every team. There isn’t any indication he wants to leave Toronto. If that changes then we can talk about trades.

There’s tons of reasons for him to want to leave: money - teams that don’t have to pay matthews, marner, and Tavares might be able to offer more. Taxes. Lack of success. We could go on.

Not with Toronto players. Only Toronto has issues keeping players. No one else.

Nylander is a Swede, Canadian taxes don’t phase swedes one big. That’s something for Americans. Now if you’re talking Matthews that’s a different story. Nylander will get around 10M a year. We can afford that comfortably with all the contracts coming off the books.

My my that’s stupid. “Hey, he’s Swedish. He’s fine making less money.” What on earth? “Hey Willy, it’s your agent! You can make $10M on your next contract. Now, that’s $4.6M after taxes in toronto, or you can get $5.9M after taxes elsewhere. You don’t care, right?”

And no, toronto can’t afford that.

Shifting the goal posts, while simultaneously making ridiculous points is not a good look.
