Realistic Bounce Back

Created by: gills90
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 6, 2023
Published: Apr. 7, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Realistically, Carter and Granlund aren't getting moved without at least a first round pick attached. Carter can't be moved at all. Keep the top six intact and assume they'll put up close to what they produced this year (6 20+ goal scorers). Improve the bottom six with a solid third line center and freeing Puustinen from Wilkes. Give Smith a chance to establish himself in the NHL. Bring back Jarry with a more reliable backup. Hold onto first round picks/Pickering to be able to make moves at deadline.

Ruuta is better than Ruhwedel so there isn't a spot for Ruhwedel in the Top 6. He's good depth but Pens also have Friedman who can play both sides so Ruhwedel is traded in favor of having a 13th forward.

Could trade Rutta to open up more cap space but I think he's a solid bottom pair defenseman so I say keep him

The defense is our biggest issue this season. Too slow and immobile. They play fine against slower teams like Wild, Stars, etc. but completely fall apart against any teams with speed. That's a huge problem as the metro is almost entirely fast teams.

Bottom six revamp and a couple defenseman are needed but goaltending needs to be better as well. That Arizona trade would be a steal for us. I just want no parts of Jarry.

I agree. I mean it's tough to pinpoint one issue cause there are so many. I guess the D is just one that isn't mentioned as much. Jarry absolutely should not be re signed imo. We just need a fresh start with goaltending.

I’m glad to hear I’m not alone in the no more Jarry camp. There’s a guy on here who’s dying on a hill for him.

I think bottom six is more of an issue than defense. Think a good third line center could alleviate a lot of issues because it would push other guys like Poehling and DOC into smaller roles. Unfortunately we're stuck with Carter so you just hope he can handle 8 minutes a night. As for goalies, I think Jarry's true talent level is closer to his performance last year than this year. That being said, under no circumstance should they bring back the Jarry-DeSmith tandem because DeSmith is not dependable enough if/when Jarry misses time

Think it's smart to give POJ and Smith an extended look next year to see if either can make the jump into a Top 4 Dman. If neither performs, you can use the 2024 first and/or 2025 first and/or Pickering as pieces to acquire a Top 4 guy
