I’m a sharks fan and that’s too much for Karlsson.
Karlsson 3 mil retained
Benning
For
Bouchard
Ceci
Campbell
Foegele
23 2nd
24 1st

That fits more what the sharks need and would be more affordable for Oilers.

At this point in time, you're saying

Karlson
Benning
For
Bouchard

which isn't that fair when you think about how well Karlsson's done

Kane, Karlsson to Edmonton 🤞

I want to see a team win the Stanley cup despite averaging the most shots against a game.

Yes when you take his Ottawa years plus this year that’s a massive underpay, but getting a young flourishing 2 way top 4 d for a 32/33 year old RD who plays no D and has a massive injury history and it’s not that far off

Karlson was good in Ottawa though, he struggled because he wasn't the number 1 defensemen when he moved to SJ, now that Burns is traded, he's back to where he was when SJ acquired him

Still plays zero D and the injuries hurt him. But yea having 2 Elite #1 RD wasn’t as ideal as we had hoped.
Both Burns and Karlsson have had fantastic years separated.

It's too much, but so is you proposal. The Oilers aren't moving Bouchard. Benning is a 3rd pairing guy (Desharnais has that covered) so your proposal leaves a gaping hole at 2RD. Ceci and Foegele are outplaying their contracts and Karlsson won't continue his current pace. He also doesn't bring a lot of defense to the table. I just don't see why Edmonton should trade defense for more offence.

Why are you ignoring Ceci, Campbell and Foegele? Ceci is a defensive defenseman who is playing 1st pairing in Edmonton. Campbell appears to be turning his game around (too soon to know for sure) and Foegele is killing it in his role.

From an on outside perspective Campbell was a bad signing, he was trending down in Toronto and has gotten worse in Edmonton plus Skinner is clearly the future, Foegele and Ceci are average players at best and with a weaker supporting cast their value would diminish exponentially.
I added those 3 for cap purposes only and would rather not take any of them on.
If it was just Karlsson 3 mil retained I would ask
Bouchard Plus a 2nd but then you guys have a bad cap crunch.
And if you take out Bouchard and give up your best RD prospect it would be 2 1sts

But to your point the smart move would be not to trade for Karlsson IMO but if it means you piss off your 2 best players by not trading for him that could be dangerous as well! And word is McDavid and Draisaitl want him!

That's what I was thinking... right mentality of sacking defensemen, wrong players to have done it with!

I think Ceci being called a "defensive defensemen who is playing 1st pairing in Edmonton" is part of the reason why Edmonton won't win the SC... He was so bad, he didn't make the Leafs Dcore 3 years ago when it featured guys like Ron Hainsey. Campbell isn't as good as guys like Shesterkin, Freddie, Saros, Ulmark, Husso, Oetinger and yet being payed the same as them for more term while being past his prime and Foegele isn't worth 2.25 mill, especially to the rebuilding Sharks. It would prob. take a combined 1st to take all of those contracts

Holland spent his money on Ekholm instead. And nobody is complaining!

Your comment about supporting cast is off base - it's true that Ceci couldn't play 1st pairing effectively without Nurse alongside, but Foegele has been driving results in the bottom-6 himself. His sky-high IPP shows that.

Not everything revolves around the Leafs. What happened in Toronto 3 years ago is completely irrelevant. The fact is Ceci is playing 1RD on the best team in the league right now.

Elkholm is way better defensively and has been providing solid offense! But his career numbers are not that i a true offensive D like Karlsson. Still it was a smart trade and adds more value that Barrie who the traded away.
Plus Bouchard is looking like a stud so I have to agree Trading for Karlsson is foolish, but if the Oilers get tossed in the 1st or 2nd round because of not scoring enough they might go crazy and trade for Karlsson but if it’s because of Bad D or goaltending he would just further compound that issue!

Oilers are unlikely to get tossed for not scoring enough though. They're the highest scoring team in the league by a lot. In fact, this year's team is the 2nd highest scoring team this century.

And they proved last year that they didn't have any problems scoring in the playoffs. So I really don't see them trading defense for offense.

And Ekholm doesn't need to be a true offensive D like Karlsson - that's Bouchard's role. He was acquired for his defensive ability and any offense he provides is a bonus.

Agreed They shouldn’t! But teams looking for that final piece do weird things. Like the sharks trading for Karlsson in the first place! Hindsight it cost them Pavelski and any chance at keeping some depth and maintaining a competitive team.
That 2020 1st (in the 18-24 range plus Norris and Pavelski along with the other pieces like Dillon Demelo Braun all shipped out for cap would have kept sharks out of this window of rebuild they are in now.
