canadiens depth chart based on NHL-readiness

Created by: zk97
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 11, 2023
Published: Apr. 11, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
left out players who i don't think get signed by MTL

Essentially, based on this chart, here is what the Habs opening night roster for 2023-24 should look like as is:

Caufield-Suzuki-Anderson
RHP-Dach-Gallagher
Hoffman-Dvorak-Ylonen
Slafkovsky-Evans-Gurianov
(Farrell, Armia)

Matheson-Savard
Guhle-Barron
Harris-Kovacevic
(Xhekaj)

Montembeault
Allen

And this is what the Rocket opening night roster for 2023-24 should look like as is:

Pitlick-Kidney-Teasdale
Pezzetta-Mysak-Mesar
Heineman-Davidson-Roy
Tuch-Kapanen-Simoneau
(Condotta)

Edmundson-Mailloux
Beaudin-Tourigny
Struble-Norlinder
(Trudeau)

Primeau
Dobes

And the extras are:

Beck (OHL)
Guindon (OHL)
Rohrer (OHL)
Hutson (NCAA)
Engstrom (SHL)
Fairbrother

... and these charts go to show why depth charts are NOT the proper way to show lineups, but more importantly, show the clog-up that could be seen in the coming years. Players like Anderson, Dvorak, Gallagher, Edmundson, etc. have long-term contracts that will not benefit the Canadiens in the future, when players such as Beck, Mesar, Heineman, and Hutson need spots in the lineup. Additionally, their contracts push players like Slafkovsky, Farrell, and Xhekaj nearly out of the lineup. Some trades do need to be made. The question is... what's a fit?

All NHL fans are welcome to make offers all around.
For the record, this is probably what the actual lines would look like:

Caufield-Suzuki-Gurianov
Slafkovsky-Dach-Anderson
Hoffman-Dvorak-Gallagher
RHP-Evans-Ylonen
(Armia)

Matheson-Barron
Guhle-Harris
Xhekaj-Savard
(Edmundson, Kovacevic)

Allen
Montembeault

All the injuries they had and with all the deadline trades happening early and so little cap space out there- the Habs really missed the boat on dumping some of their contracts.
Hoffman, Edmundson and Monahan, Byron (if healthy) shouldve been dealt. Even guys like Savard, Evans I would look at moving as theyre going to lose their jobs soon with all the prospects coming- best to get something now.
Harvey Pinard should be moved - sell high, as his numbers are inflated due to him getting more icetime than he should warrant (on a good team without crippling injuries).
Theyre going to be a bad team for another year or two- best move out anyone who wont be contributing to those teams either due to contract status, better prospects coming- or age.

will be interesting to see if Dubois gets his wish and becomes a hab. They need his skill and size up front- and hes still in his prime.

Pezzetta and Primeau have to clear waivers and both will be lost for nothing. I think Allen gets traded in off season

i don't, if you read the second part after the fat paragraph, which has edmundson in the NHL
he's been the 5th best habs LD (and 7th best D) this season, so theoretically, he should be in the AHL based on how he's played, but hes somehow still a trade piece so he should stay in the NHL

i would assume so, but he has not been good one bit so i don't think you get a good return for him

prob smtg along the lines of what they traded to get him... a 3rd to 5th would be feasible

Yes with 100% certainty Edmundson and hoffman will be moved.. Where i disagree with your team is on Gurionov.. I dont he has done enough to deserve a contract... I expect that either roy or Beck will make the habs.. Beck had a great camp last year and was only not kept because of his age .... He is great defensively and great on faceoffs.. so if we moved dvorak then i see Beck having a good chance at the fourth line center job with Evans moving up to third line center. i am really impressed with roy but he might need a year of seasoning in laval.

and even if Beck doesnt make the team as soon as a center goes down he will get called up and probably do what Harvey did this year by playing so well not get sent down again. Beck might make Dvorak expendable even without the dubois trade.
