Ending rebuild sooner

Created by: Reff
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 17, 2023
Published: Apr. 17, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If we want to be competitive starting next season, we must take the extra year of PLD and not wait until 2024. Therefore, FLA's 1st this year and a good prospect like Beck seem to be the consensual base price. We should add a little more, this will depend on talks between Cheveldayoff and Hughes.

Caufield gets the same kind of contract as Jason Robertson so he can sign a bigger deal in 4 years, still as a RFA.

We get rid of what we can (Edmunson, Hoffman and Wideman). Realistically, we can't trade Armia or Gallagher, we'll have to keep them. Armia could be traded in 2024-2025 only.

Mailloux and Farrell should start in Laval, but with a solid training camp, they could snatch a spot over guys like Belzile, Gurianov or Barron.

Honestly, with this team, and everyone staying healthy, I like our odds!

I think the jets would push for one more lower teir prospect like mysak who could realistically use a change of scenery. Doesn't need to be someone insane but along the lines of Florida's first, Beck and that extra lower guy the jets would accept no doubt.

    100% agreed.

    But.

In Montreal, losing 3-4 years in a row is not an option. That's why I think HuGo will want to accelerate the rebuild. We must also take into consideration that in 2026, we will have to renegotiate TV rights, and with a good team on the ice, numbers will be higher.

I think your right close to the move for the Jets. I think someone said in a comment above that one more prospect might do it, and I agree, I think they would look at one more prospect and the deal is as good as done and both teams would be very happy. The one thing I would make sure of though as a GM would be to see if the Jets can do a sign-and-trade for Montréal as it would be quite the risk of trading futures in a non-playoff (currently) franchise for him to walk.

As for Joel Edmunson, if a second round pick is the value, I will be jumping for joy because that means Ceci on the oilers is worth a 1st and a 3rd. So I hope for the Oilers sake your right, but tbh I think a second is fair value. The one defenceman that I think could use a rehabilitation stint and maybe sign a 4-5 year deal that would make sense for the habs is Klingberg, maybe something to think about if a team said no to a second, but maybe a 3rd and a signed klingberg?

Detroit is in their 7th year of their rebuild, There's no such thing as a quick rebuild. just ask Edmonton who took way over 10 years to complete theirs.

And sorry but this team is nowhere near the 4th best team in the Atlantic. Buffalo, Detroit and Ottawa are way ahead of Montreal in their rebuilds.

I would not move Beck for PLD, Kidney would be available for that move. Hell I'd even throw in Mysak and maybe someone on the reserve/unsigned list (depending which player). As of right now Beck is likely our 3C for the next while once he comes up full time.

But to get something, you have to give something. Not sure WPG would take Kidney/Mysak/another C prospect over Beck. Values don't add.

The Jets deal would require a roster player going to Wpg and seeing as they would be very thin on C if PLD is traded, Dvorak is the most logical choice.

I agree that rushing a rebuild is never a good idea however, I don't consider adding PLD as rushing the rebuild but rather adding to the core of the future as his age (24), fits right in line.

    Armia will be bought out.
    Wideman sent to Laval.
    Gurianiv doesn't get signed .
Hoffman, Gally and Pitlick stay to boost value and perhaps trade down the line.
Also I think Slafs and Belzile are in Laval to start the season

Then I wouldn't make the deal, I don't agree with paying that much for the guy. We're likely to draft a guy like Smith @ 5OA if we maintain that position so PLD might not really be necessary anyway since we'll be 2 - 3 years away from pretending so we can afford the development time. I don't see a way to end this rebuild sooner & proper though so that's part of my bias here.

Kidney isn't anything to overlook either, the kid has had a breakout season this year. I was thinking more like a Sobolev or Kostenko (RD) from the reserve list, not another C. I can see Hughes being willing to move players he didn't draft before moving the players he actually selected within ~ 1 year of selecting them.
