First of all, nice cap space remaining.

Second, that's a big risk and also DeBrincat won't sign for that.

Cat is good as gone at that offer...no way does he take only $7.9M regardless of term

I tend to agree, BUT, I heard recently that the qualifying offer only needs to be is his salary in the first year of a new deal. Not sure how accurate the statement was, but it seemed to line up with the language in the CBA about "qualifying offers". So, if they were to front load the deal with his actual salary being at least $9M in the first season, it could possibly get done. I don't think arbitration would help him out much here either. He doesn't have to take the deal, but as long as he is qualified, OTT will own his rights.

Per Verbeek,

"I'm not considering moving John Gibson," Verbeek said flatly. "I've actually sat down and had a conversation with him about this. We have an excellent number one goaltender. The hardest thing in the NHL is finding a number one goaltender and I can speak from experience on this, because when we were in Tampa, we did not have a number one goaltender and we gave up numerous assets trying to chase one. March 8, 2023, its on the NHL website.

And retention on Gibson is a complete non starter.
