Definitely major surgery

Created by: Angusc
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 24, 2023
Published: Apr. 30, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Obviously Kings deal is not happening, but only if Kopitar decides to retire next season when his contract is up and they need to get a star center to fill the position other than Byfield.

If Reinbacher is taken which I would like, then most likely they will draft a right shot d in Axel Sandin Pellikka.

Super minor detail but if Vancouver were to acquire Roy, he'd 100% be the guy you pair with Hughes. I think that Tampa trade would be a huge mistake for Vancouver to make. I feel like Pod is gonna be a stud but is just gonna take a bit of time to get there. Be patient with him.

If for whatever reason we trade Pettersson we’d be doing a full on rebuild. So start the LA deal with Byfield + Clarke, guys like Roy or Iafallo wouldn’t make sense

I'm willing to be patient, but Podkolzin for me hasn't really moved the needle as a 10th overall pick unlike Boldy and Caufield have. I don't know if it's because the team's player development is not good compared to Minnesota or Montreal's or if it's the player, but he has to step it up. Other than that, I never thought about the Roy pairing with Hughes since I haven't seen Roy as much,

I considered replacing Durzi for Clarke, but I think King fans will value Clarke more and that the Canucks want ready roster players in Druzi, Iaffalo and Roy. I chose Byfield since their offense will be bad without him and Byfield addresses that center need

It would be a pipe dream if we got both Clarke and Byfield though alongside getting Durzi, Iaffalo, Roy and that 1st though.

We’re giving up a young, borderline top 5 C to a division rival in this scenario. It should have to be a painful return for them. If Byfield and Clarke aren’t included then it doesn’t work imo

IMO I don't think we should target Colton as he doesn't kill penalties and mostly plays on the wing

Trading Petterson would be a mistake. He has so many great years ahead of him, you'll likely never replace him in a trade.

Get something decent for Miller and Boeser. Buy out OEL. Bring in some UFAs. This team doesn't need a full rebuild.

I remember many scouts saying that whoever took Podkolzin would be taking a risk by acquiring him. He was one of those boom or bust prospects. It seems most Russian prospects are seen like that, and I assume that's because in comparison to NA and Europe leagues, the KHL, VHL, and MHL are not scouted nearly as much for the NHL draft. Personally having watched him at the WJC and a handful of Vancouver games I've watched and he has played, I can see the potential in his game and just think it's gonna take some more time to come together. I think of a guy like Mittelstadt. Different type of player/prospect but what he needed was time and patience. It appears to have paid off. Unlike Mittelstadt's situation, I don't believe Vancouver messed up his development timeline and set him back 3-4 years from reaching his potential. I do think that we will see if Pod is gonna be an effective NHL player this coming season, assuming he gets ample opportunity
