Give me Cal Foote

Created by: BrodeurBro30
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: May 3, 2023
Published: May 3, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
NJD
  1. Foote, Cal
Additional Details:
Cal Foote is currently outside of the Top 6. I’m not sure whether the Preds will even qualify him this offseason. If they do, he’ll just be a seventh defenseman.
NSH
  1. Málek, Jakub [Reserve List]
Additional Details:
Jakub Malek is a 4th RD Pick (2021). He was an overager in the draft and finished with .904% this season in Liiga.

He’s 6’4” and only 21. Definitely a project player, but instantly becomes the second best goalie prospect behind Askarov. Malek broke out this year and has shown tremendous progress this season.

He will either play in the AHL next season or the year after. He’s more than capable of reaching the NHL and Nashville has done a great job at developing goalies.

my personal bet is that they qualify him. but i think the last thing that woukd interest nashville is a goalie prospect though.

Do Devils need RD? Does Nashville need goalie prospects?

Also, if Cal skates like Nolan, I don’t think he would fit in our system anyway. Fitzy likes his dmen, “long and mobile”

I'd rather see Nemec, Walsh, or a veteran like Gudas in the 3RD spot. Foote isn't wanted when we have plenty in the pipeline.

Is there a specific need that you’re lacking in your prospect pool (i.e defense or forwards)? You only have one goalie prospect (yes ik he’s A tier) in your pool, why not add depth?

We kinda need RD but I'd take Nemec and Walsh over Foote. Nashville would like a goalie prospect once Askarov graduates but I figure they'd want a younger one with a higher ceiling. I agree on the assessment of Foote.

I wouldn’t be opposed to taking a flier on Foote and letting Nemec cook in the AHL for another year. Graves isn’t coming back next year and do we really want Luke Hughes to kill penalties. I still see something in the former first rounder and I think he’d form a solid pair with Bahl and keep the seat warm for Nemec and Casey.

Dougie, Marino, Severson…Nemec and Walsh coming…Hughes was RD at Michigan…Seamus Casey there now…

I think we are good. Could probably use a defensive RD in pipeline…maybe something for this years draft. But for next few years we are probably in good shape.

It’s just the mobility that concerns me. All of our dmen are quick and can cover space quickly. That frees up the wings to play higher up, which leads to our transition game. It all starts in back end.

(My preference is to extend Severson…worry about the logjam later)

Walsh is a power play specialist. Maybe Walsh is the piece sent for Foote (Nashville had an awful PP last year and will Barrie stay a Pred). Truth is, he will receive no PP time with the Devils next year, unless the Devils run 2D on the PP. Luke Hughes will be quarterbacking PP2. Someone needs to take Graves place on the PK and Foote gives us depth on the PK so it doesn’t force Luke to kill penalties.

Let’s say worst comes to shove, Foote is a one year experiment and Nemec takes his spot the following season.

I am not interested in extending Severson only to trade him a year or two later. He’ll take up more cap and you said in a previous post we don’t have shutdown RD in our pool. We have Case McCarthy and Charlie Leddy (4th RD pick in 2022). Marino is excellent, but you need depth.

Foote’s speed is a concern. No doubt, but he’ll be on the third pair and Bahl is solid. He will have more playing opportunity in Jersey and his brother is on the team. He’s got a lot to play for and I truly believe Foote will be a requisite replacement.

Sign Sevo. Or use Walsh to bridge to Nemec for year or two. Case McCarthy may never get here. Sounds like he is waiting to see what happens with his brother. But I sure hope he does. Leddy will be more of a project, I think. And don’t forget Hurtig. Reviews have been trending up.

Totally disagree with that assessment of Walsh. He has two way value.

Leddy is not remotely close to the NHL and McCarthy is about to be a UFA if we don't sign him, which I think we already would have if we intended to. While I agree that Severson is not a practical signing, our RD pipeline is just Nemec, Casey, and Walsh.

McCarthy hasn’t signed because he may be going back to school for 5th year (he may stick around to play a year with his brother). But not decided yet and may not be until after draft. If he doesn’t, he probably signs. If he does, we will still own his rights until August 2024.

Also keep in mind that the four “friends of Jack” we drafted in 2019 were taken, in part, because they were close with our star player (Clarke, McCarthy, Vukojevich, and Moynihan all were childhood friends Hughes and played either minor or junior hockey with him). Should be able to sign those guys.

Huh, didn't know that. I thought it was always after the senior year.
