Matvei Michkov in play at 5

Description
I'm curious...

Kent Hughes is on record, saying he would like to add another 1st round pick in this year's draft. He's also looking to build around the team's young players, mainly Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Kirby Dach, Juraj Slafkovsky, Felip Mesar, Owen Beck, Joshua Roy, Kaiden Guhle, Justin Barron, Jordan Harris, Lane Hutson, Logan Mailloux, etc.

However, there's a perception in Montreal that Matvei Michkov could be a risk the Habs aren't ready to take. So I'm wondering...should they try to trade down, would there be any interest ? I'm looking at three teams mostly in this scenario: Arizona Coyotes, Washington Capitals and Detroit Redwings seems to me, judging from the outside, as teams who could be tempted by Michkov.

So what do you say ? What are you willing to pay to jump at #5. I'm just curious...

I would trade 9, 17, 42, 43... if Carlsson is still on the board.

Keep in mind, he has not played center in the SHL with men. He is possibly the highest chance of top 5 bust, or at least not getting to expectations. I could see him being like Zadina or Kaako. A better bet is wait for Moore, hopefully, and Pelikka.

Honestly did not know about that guy but theres no way Mitchkov gets drafted (to the armed forces)

All men are required by law to do a one year mandatory military service as soon as they turn 18. He will be drafted, just like all other 18-year olds in Russia.

Detroit SHOULD wait and see what is available at 9. Picks 5-15 would be top 5 or 10 in any other draft. Moore or Leonard would be ideal at 9, trade up to get Pelikka. If Moore and Leonard are gone, take Pelikka and trade up to get Yager, or stand pat and hope for Barlow. Of course, Yzerman has his own plan, so who knows?

I disagree. Assuming the board breaks Bedard, Fantilli, Carlsson, Smith... The uncertainty with Michkov and level of talent between 5 and 9 makes a trade up almost unnecessary. If it happens I think it'll be for a lot less than one would expect.

Smith is dropping. His shot is maybe not NHL caliber and he can't skate as well as many in this draft class. He also plays with the best players, unlike Moore who makes the most of his 2nd line minutes. I'm cautious of drafting him, but must admit the potential is there.

I think the caps wouldl definitely offer something around the lines of 9, 40, and some sort of 23 3rd round equivalent (one of their 25 2nds or a guy like Suzdalev, Persson, maybe Chesley) to do so if Michkov is still there. I also think that NHL teams are way overrating the "russian factor." Miroshnichenko just voided his KHL contract a year early to come to Hershey, and the NHL and KHL transfer agreement lapsed without being renewed. I think it would be hard to get him to come over immediately, but I would be more surprised if he actually did play out the rest of his KHL contract than if he came earlier. For a team like the Caps that is very used to dealing with Russian prospects, definitely seems like a worthwhile risk.

I'd toss Persson, the highest of Washington's 2025 2nds, and another pick of some sort (2023 3rd or some sort of pick swap?) to Montreal in order move up for Michkov

Smith absolutely has bust potential. The difference is, Smith probably bottoms out as a bottom 6 center, while Carlson just goes back to Europe. I'd be wary of drafting either of them.

Yeah, believe me, as a fan of the team that do own that pick, I get it ! This is gonna be a tough 5th overall pick to handle...

I think Michkov is there at 5.

I think so too. I'm just not sure Hughes will go that way.

PLD signs for the 2024-25 season and the KHL is the 2nd best league in the world so Michkov should be ready to step in and play. There is something else I've been wondering the NHL and the KHL honoring each others contract is part of an agreement and shortly after Russia's invasion of the Ukraine the NHL severed all ties with the KHL. So if he did come over while still under contract would the NHL let him play?
