Seems like a bad move to me. Paying Bratt UFA money and giving ump three picks to acquire him. Just sign a UFA (this year or next) and keep the picks.

UFA market is dead this year. Legit the top scorer in the market is Alex freaking Killorn. Not anything against him as a player, kinda like him, but he's not at this level.

Bratt is a long-term investment. Given his age, this contract is very unlikely to go terribly wrong.

Next year they probably don't have the funds to go after a big acquisition, should they re-sign Wilson. Obviously, without the Canes trade, they can't afford the Bratt signing either.

I was looking at the winger UFA list this summer, I count just eight winger that I would consider that might be "difference makers". You're right not that many
But I wonder if another way to go would to acquire a player form a cap strapped team who need to get rid of a big salary, such Taylor Hall 6m X 2 from the Bruins . Or is an offer sheet to some player "cheaper" in aquistion such Bratt/LAF/DeBrincat.

There definitely is other ways to do this, but I'm just not convinced there's targets of Bratt's level, and age, available.

WSH is filled with near or over 30 year olds. Imo they need someone younger than Taylor Hall or your regular 28-29 year old UFA player.

Offer sheeting Lafreniere is an interesting idea though, but I'd question if it is an actual upgrade. He's been pretty bad honestly.

Yeah the idea of Hall was for a short term solution . LAF, actually according to some Rangers fans has been quite good five on five. He hasn't had that much PP time that takes away from his points. Sure he was a #1 pick overall, but lots of players (almost all) in that draft year (2020) haven't been nearly as good in the NHL.

Way too high of a price to pay for Teravainen. Even with a second round pick added.

I'd call it more like Kuzy partly retained for Honka+2nd. He had pretty abysmal year statistically, but is still a 50 point guy so he's worth something. And then swapping two wingers that had meh years, just Protas+6th added due to Mantha costing a tad more.

Perhaps.

63 million just sounds so good with Bratt...with his jersey number and all.

Agreed, the Fiala comp is strong. Only see him getting traded if he insists on >8.5 long term, but I could something like a 4 x 7.75 extension since it seems like Bratt's agent is all about the bread given how the extension talks went last season. Not a caps fan but do hope they get a playmaker for Ovi

You're going to regret that in 2069 when Devils is finally contending but the 66 year old Jesper keeps hampering your cap space
