Leafs Decide To Get Crazy - Marner Trade to NJD

Description
I want to preface this by saying that I am NOT someone who wants to see this core get reworked yet. Marner is my favourite Leafs player, but if winning a cup means moving Mitch, then I would bite my lip and wish his well.

First off, let's start with my reasoning for moving Mitch and not any other of the core. We'll start with Tavares, who gets a pretty brief explanation. He's the captain, he's on the wrong side of 30 and makes 11 million dollars, and has a full NMC. He's not going anywhere. Next up is Matthews, who is already one of the greatest Leafs of all time and is the key to this teams success. AM34 is far from the issue. Finally we've got Nylander, who has the "killer instinct" we so desperately need, as well as a fantastic offensive game. His style is just too perfect for us, and even if we extend him, he will still cost less than Mitch. Now, the Leafs without Marner are a VERY different team. Mitch does so much to create room, cover up defensively, and is generally just the heartbeat of this team's offense. The main issue however is the money. While Marner's playmaking ability objectively makes the Leafs a better team, having that much money locked up in one guy stifles our depth structure. Obviously we have 2 other guys also making an absurd amount of money, but like I mentioned earlier, one is the GOAT and the other has a full NMC.

New Jersey is, in my opinion, the perfect team to try to acquire Marner. They are already a pretty strong team and are in the hunt for a Stanley Cup. They have the assets AND cap space to acquire Marner, which is a move that immediately makes them the best team in the league IMO. Their main core are already locked down on long term deals that are extremely team friendly, so they also don't have to worry about risking any of their core. Plus, the cap ceiling will begin to rise at a decent rate, giving them enough flexibility to bridge their RFAs before signing them to bigger deals when the cap has raised a good amount. Getting back an elite scoring winger in Alexander Holtz would be a good start for Toronto. I don't want to say that Holtz was necessarily ousted by the Devils, but he was sent up and down quite a bit, and if the Devils are adding Marner to a RW group that already consists of Mercer and Bratt, then there isn't a ton of room for Holtz anyways. Next we have Arseni Gritsyuk, a prospect who is not very well known outside of the Devils fandom. He just had a fantastic KHL campaign and could be a VERY nice target for Toronto to go out and get. Then we have Sharangovich who despite having a down year is a guy that can come in to play on the PK and has good scoring upside. He can be signed for 1 year at his QO while still expiring as an RFA, which gives us the flexibility next offseason to decide what to do after getting Matthews and Nylander extended. The 2nd round pick will be late anyways, so there's no real loss there.

Now we have the UFA signings. The big one is Killorn, who plays a very hard nosed style of game and has that cup winning experience. I know many people (including myself) point to the fact that Killorn had a stretch of 30(!) playoff games without a goal, but his style is something that the Leafs desperately need. Then we have Tyler Bertuzzi, who I think would be awesome on the Leafs. His style of play is extremely sought after, and he has recently found a higher gear in his offensive game in a fantastic stretch of playoff games. The final UFA signing was Damon Severson who is coming off of a really great season. I used Brodie as a contract comp. in terms of length, but he gets 2 mil more because he is objectively the better defenseman.

Again, I'm not a huge fan of blowing up the core, but if it has to be done, this is what I would like to see

Thus the higher quality prospects coming back the other way. Holtz and Gritsyuk are both elite. Sharangovich has high upside. If it comes down to it, you could change the 2023 2nd to a 2024 1st

Kinda of meaningless post, when you trade a 11m with virtually no co being returned to the Leafs.
Show the New Jersey side of the trade, I imagine it's completely unworkable for them.
Severson for 7m?

What if Matthews/Marner is a packaged deal, you deal Marner (his best friend) and Matthews won’t resign? Personally I believe it’s going to be Nylander only because they don’t believe they can fit him in long term. He is certainly not deserving of it.

Tavares can’t play Center anymore, the shift to wing full time HAS to start next season.

Jarnkrok is fine if an injury occurs to put into the top 6 but he is not a full time top 6 option.

I’d pass hard on Killorn, this team needs to get younger/faster.

Severson would be a nice addition.

Knies Matthews Nylander
Tavares Player X Marner
Robertson Player X Jarnkrok
Lafferty Holmberg Acciari

I agree about Killorn. I only gave him 1 year to act as a stop-gap for other prospects to get ready for the NHL game. His mentorship could be nice as well. Again though, I have no interest in committing any more than 1 year to the guy. My only fear about Nylander getting dealt is that because of his pending UFA status, we won't get the kind of return we deserve. Marner atleast has term to justify a big return. Plus, the cap savings + youth we could get back for Mitch are far more valuable than the cap savings + youth we get from trading Nylander.

Again though, I'd rather just trade none of them. I really hope the Leafs address their need of a centerman at this years draft. The FA class is extremely weak for centers this year and we don't have the assets to pry away a young centerman without hurting our chances at competing. We've really backed ourselves into a corner here, I'm very curious to see how we navigate through this offseason

They've got 2 years of the cap potentially rising and the option of bridge deals for their RFAs. Marner is already making so much that a long term deal would result in an incremental pay raise, if any at all. Hell, he could even make less AAV on his next deal in favor of term. I'm sure they could find a way

All of those guys could make 7-8m potentially on long term deals, let's say they are all bridge for 4-6m though and Marner takes 10m or the same. That's going to be 12-18m raise. I don't think the cap will go up that much in the next 5 years without the AAVs going up as well. So, I'm skeptical that 2 years is enough.

If Nemec, Hughes, and Mercer could ALL make north of 7m on their next deals, the Devils are screwed either way. I think it's possible for them to accommodate Marner. If not them, then a similar deal from another team works as well. I was just trying to lay the foundation of a deal

I think your starting point is the wrong Pacioretty comp (look at 2022, not 2018)

It is a flat cap year. Marner is making $11m.

Holtz - 2 years at ELC
Gritsyuk - 2 years at ELC (if he signs this summer...he may go back to KHL 1 more year)
Sharangovich - 1 year at $2.05m.

...those are three good inexpensive pieces...guys we will need in our lineup as well.

I think the first name in any potential Marner-to-NJ deal would be Jesper Bratt.
Then add a prospect (say, Clarke, if there is no retention on Marner....Holtz or Gritsyuk if they retain ~$2m)
If Leafs wanted two top prospects...it would probably be Palat instead of Bratt.

Maybe, but they are all RFAs and Marner will be a ufa, so high risk game there. It would make more sense to deal Bratt like NHLfan10506 suggested from Jersey's side.

I think if the Leafs were to trade Marner they would want an established top 6 forward in the trade but the centerpiece would be a promising young Dman since Marner's offensive abilities will probably be missed less than his defensive contributions and pking ability.

If they do trade one of the guys, I would hope it's to the Western Conference team or at least an aging eastern team.

What are your thoughts on trading for Shane Wright?
