Have you seen the free agent goalies on the market? There’s a plethora of options for the same price and skill level and without giving up a second rounder for. Also we have Jarry on the back burner if all else fails, we can offer him what he wants to sign for.

Penguins decline.

I am sure Samsonov would have interest from many teams. Doesn't have to be the pens

They can't afford to. The 2nd year is 2 million. That will be needed. Samsonov had his moments but he also let in some back breaker goals as well. Woll didn't and he has looked really good all year. Murray had some good stretches when healthy this season. I am comfortable with Woll taking the reigns as the 1A in the tandem. Kallegren can be kept as the 3rd stringer and he's fine in that role. Or anything better is cool so long as it's cheap. I would feel better about that than I did at the beginning of this year.

Washington isn’t going to do that. Niemela is a B-Prospect and the 1st is Late. The Capitals will just re-sign Wilson, nothing here makes them consider moving him.

What would it cost though? They would also have whoever they drafted 28th in the draft as an option as well. Holmberg may be of interest.

Essentially I would think 2 firsts and a couple of young players/prospects.

23 player they draft 28th overall
24 1st
Holmberg and whoever else you want to give a shot to.

Why drop a second to make a lateral move from the guy they already have?

If the caps are way out again at the deadline like this past year and it is clear they can't come to an agreement with Wilson, I think this would be a pretty competitive package. Any deadline package would have to start with the 24 1st and build on from there, and the extra stuff in this is pretty good for a TDL rental. I don't think anyone would know for sure though until they see how the market was shaping up and who the actual contenders are.

In the offseason though, BMac has made it clear enough that he's not moving Wilson unless the futures are so incredible you literally couldn't refuse or it is the only way to add a truly elite player to the roster. Leafs don't have the futures, so any Wilson to TOR deal in the offseason would have to involve Marner or Nylander coming back to DC (obviously with other stuff in, not straight up).

There is no price that fans of another team will accept. The Capitals love Wilson and he’s a Heart and Soul player that will be invaluable in teaching young players how to be pros as the team rebuilds. The Capitals have enough prospects like Niemela and Holmberg. In aggregate value the Capitals would probably want a mid-1st Rd Pick for Wilson (10-18 Range) as the main piece and add from there. A Late 1st (28OV) isn’t good enough and B-Prospects don’t bridge the gap.

Jarry certainly wasn't as good as Samsonov this season. He's also injury prone.

Wilson isn't bringing an elite player back. At least not a current one. If he's available, I hope the Leafs go after him. The refs let everything go in the playoffs, may as well bring in some guys that can do what everyone does to us every year.

In my opinion to even start conversations for Wilson (as the caps are high on him and every team in the league would want to have him) it has to be one of the players you have off limits, either Knies, Marner, or Nylander most likely. I don't see the caps going after Matthews and they would steer clear of Tavares because of his cap combined with his cap hit.

Agreed, but Jarry’s been substantially better over the course of their careers. Samsonov is mediocre, at best. No need to spend an asset on a a guy like that.

I am not sure that's fair. Washington has been a pretty poor defensive team for a number of seasons and both the guys they gave up had really good seasons. I think calling Samsonov mediocre is pretty dumb. That being said, I don't think he's a high end goalie.

yea when I mean to get an elite player I envision him as the Huberdeau in the Tkachuk deal from last summer, where the caps would package him with some futures to get a true top 30 player in the league. I just don't think there's a deal that makes sense until possibly the deadline

Thinking a team would drop a second rounder on a guy who, in the span of one calendar year, 1) didn’t receive a QO from his first team and, 2) is already being shopped by his second team is dumb, lol. Future journeyman backup.

The reason I would trade him is not because he isn't good. If we can get him for under 3.5 for 3 or more years, I would take him for sure.

He wasn't saying he's as good as Huberdeau he's saying he would be packaged with futures for a better player (Like Huberdeau was).

Wilson will be re-signed this offseason and any trade for him with Toronto would include Knies+, straight swap for Nylander, or adding assets for Marner.

Obviously with a contract that changes his value. If strangely he isn't re-signed before the season and the caps decide to sell off this is a fair offer for him as a rental. I would imagine every playoff team would try to get him at 50% retained so that may drive up the value. However I think this scenario is very unlikely

That's just insane, the caps can keep him then. He's not worth Nylander that's just ****ing crazy to think.

im not saying that wilson is literally as good as Huberdeau (although he was this past year ... ), just that he would serve the same sort of function of giving up a very good player that you don't want to in order to obtain an even better player
