I know we had this plan to build up our prospect pool, but now that it's one of the best in the league, let's ruin it to trade for a guy that'll be here 2 years, before the rest of our team is good, and MAYBE we can make playoffs before he dips out to a bigger market.

Cap hit is always gonna be 50x as important when trading a player on a big contract cause the cap is what actually binds teams. The billionaire owner isn't going to care if a guy is due 2 mil extra than the cap hit when their team is trying to win. I genuinely cannot tell if you just don't understand this.

How many of those would want a player who has 2 years left on his deal (meaning it cannot be a sign & trade) and is a UFA at the end of it (meaning he is not under team control)? I am pretty sure that number goes to 0.

Leafs may find a trade for Marner, but if you want futures you are not going to get "what you hope he's worth". The only deal for Marner will be a "hockey deal" with another contending team. Like a Panarin for Marner sort of deal.
