My takes:

New kid line - think they can work well together.
Skinner, Mitts and Tuch reunited after strong finish.
Peterka promoted after excellent Worlds tournament and produces as expected.
Last chance for UPL to impress - hope he has a good summer training because I don't think Adams will trade him away especially with Comrie already buried in the minors.
They could also sign Girgensons but I don't see a place where he could play next season with Greenway under contract.

Why would we pay two 2nd and 3rd for a defenseman we don't even need?

Only the first part is true.

He's a good puck mover and effective on the PP, but he's pretty awful in his own end and doesnt do a good job at preventing zone entries, which was a big problem for the team last year.

This is the problem, we do not need a PP QB defenseman. We have Dahlin and Power, we need a player who is good in defense.
