Offer sheet for PLD and sign him in 2024

Created by: KentMcNally

Description
I prefer the idea that other people have proposed (most recently Just a Guess) of signing PLD to a 1 year offer sheet at $6.3 M in order to make Winnipeg match the offer (if Winnipeg does not match it, Montreal gives up its 2024 first round pick and 2024 third round picks). Then Winnipeg could not trade PLD and that walks him right to UFA status and the Habs can sign him in 2024.
A few things to think about though: 1. Would they go this route again after the Carolina events with Kotkaniemi?
2. Would the Jets possibly accept the 2024 First and Third from Montreal? Would that be bad for Montreal, given that Montreal is in rebuild mode and next year's pick might be quite good?
3. Wouldn't Montreal HAVE TO get Caufield signed before they try any of this so that Winnipeg does not try to do the same thing back to Montreal and the Kotkaniemi story is revived!

That's a very popular belief. Most Jets fans are expecting something like this. This is what MTL should do. Completely bleeps the Jets, but it may motivate ownership to finally fire the GM and start the rebuild.

You'll catch the typical flack from Jets fans about this but it's a real possibility.

1) Yes, I think so.

2) When it comes down to it, that's the baseline for his value. Anything we offer above and beyond that is a gift.

3) I'd definitely want him locked in prior to making that move.

Jets match. it's only a 300k increase from his QO. Will get more for him at trade deadline at worst.

There's no way the Jets don't match this offer. They believe they can get more than a first and a third for him at the deadline.

If the Jets match,,,, the Jets lose 100% of next year value as he can't trade him for one full year... walk out UFA with nothing in return!

Montreal then wonders why it's so much harder for them to retain their RFAs then every other team

I do not know. It is a good question that kind of scares me. If Winnipeg says "Don't let the door hit you on the way out" to PLD, then Montreal should really try to improve this offseason and speed up the rebuild (which I am not a fan of) so that the possible 2024 draft pick going to the Jets is as close to being in the 10 to 20 range as possible (rather than being in the 1 to 10 range).

Or the jets could simply tell PLD in negotiations that they'll match any offer below the 1 2 3 threshold, offer PLD a 1 year deal for slightly more money, and trade him as a rental.

PLD gets: more money and out of Winnipeg 1 year sooner.
Winnipeg gets: Assets

Too many holes to make the playoffs, not enough scoring, not solid enough blueline and mediocre goaltending doesn’t equal playoffs,

Could be true. There is a reason teams don't do this very frequently at all.

If Offer sheets became more frequent it would ruin the value contracts that teams get on RFAs contracts and drive prices up around the league. None of the owners want this

Great description of PLD reality..
Knowing Gorton respect with other GM's & Hugues new at that role... Offer-Sheet is off the table and the value of 2024 TOP 1st pick is way too big!
even if NO Bedard type on this draft versus in 2025 where a new sensation is coming...named Misa.

Suggest that a real hockey trade with Late 1st, NHL Center, Young D= 30th OA + Dvorak + Harris

Aye, there is the issue. If I were the GM of the Jets and I should be, because I would be so much better than Chevytakestoomanydaysoff. I would do it. Exactly, take the 1st and 3rd and start rebuilding / brining up some kids to give them a chance.

Dump Scheifele and Wheeler for whatever you can get, dangle Ehlers and KFC, trade Helly for as much as you can and tank this year with a bunch of kids like OTT and MTL have done.

That assumes that (1) both sides are actually negotiating with each other (maybe PLD is not really trying to negotiate too hard and (2) that PLD trusts that management would do what's best for him this year in a trade situation. You could be right, but it is not guaranteed to happen like that.

If he wants out of winnipeg as much as montreal fans claim, the last thing he would do is sign an offer sheet knowing it would guarantee he stays in winterpeg the entire year. And you'd have to be an idiot to sign an offer sheet without having a pretty good idea of what your team is going to do

Oh yeah. I am not saying that the PLD acquisition fixes things dramatically for Montreal so that they rocket up the standings. I am just saying they should TRY to improve as much as possible so that the 2024 lost pick to Winnipeg doesn't really bit them in the butt and they end up potentially giving the Jets a really good shot at Macklin Cellebrini in 2024.

I would just keep drafting and building, possibly trade up from Florida pick or pick or trade back from 5. Go find some ufas that fit a 5 year plan, and play out some of the other contracts, it’s boring but probably not a place to gamble your potential 24 lottery pick.

I agree and I don't
Agree: NO PLAYOFF
Don't agree= Reason... just too young as a core group... it is not mediocre Goaltending (see with Vegas)

Just see a perfect spot to have goalie of the future, top 6 forward and another option to the blueline going forward in the 3 picks in top 60

I would simply sign back Monahan for a one year deal @ 3M... and wait for PLD next year and take the risk

From an outsider fan:

1) If this is the cheapest they could get PLD prior to FA: 100% yes

2) Yes they would... MTL isn't better (even with PLD) than the other 7 Atlantic teams, I could see (like you mentioned) the Jets offer sheet Caufield or wait for whomever the Canadiens take at 5 or Guhele/Slaf/Hutson when they come up

3) Yes, but the Jets could wait until another top guy is available like Slaf/Guhele to snag

MTL's best option is to wait until FA unless PLD shows any signs of wavering and let the Jets trade him at TDL
