Mantha plays a good game in his own end, and plays physical and is strong along the boards. Playing with scheifele and ehlers will bring the offence along, while his presence will improve their 5v5 play.
Best case: the jets have a new top line that 5v5 play.
Worst case: The jets get a heavily overpaid 3rd liner who frustrated with his offensive ability, but still won’t hurt you in your end.
Ryan Johansson is really good at faceoffs and Winnipeg needs that. He’s primarily a playmaker and good in his own zone, which would be good with Connor. Perfetti drives offensive zone play so he should continue be able to do that effectively as well, thereby helping offset some of connor’s defensive deficiencies. He can also serve as a stopgap until one of Lucius or lambert are ready.
Best Case: Jets get a solid 2C
Worst case: Johanson gives middle 6 mins.
Finally, If I’m chevy, I throw money at helly and scheifele and get them to stay. We can’t replace a top 15 c and top 3 goalie. We just can’t with Winnipeg being on every no trade list. Moving those guys will mean a retool, but that retool that will never end. It will be perpetual mediocrity. Therefore, I kept them for matching 9.5Mx6 deals. Scheifele doesn’t look like he’ll need too much convincing to stay, as long as the jets want to compete. Helly will need some convincing cause it doesn’t sound like he believes in the current group. Some changes to the core and bringing in some other guys could help change his mind. Then a boatload of money doesn’t hurt. The term allows the jets to develop a top line centre by the time schiefele retires. If lucius or lambert hit their potential, they could be that. However, it's more likely the jets will need to draft a 1C sometime in the next 6 years. Similarly, the 6 year term allows Dom DiVincentiis to develop comfortably and take his time. Additionally, the jets can keep drafting a goaltender a year to hope they hit on one eventually. This scheme brought helly and comrie to the NHL, and maybe would've berdin too if he didn't have to go back for personal reasons. And now we have dom and holm. Its a scheme that works that will likely bring a starter sometime in the next 6 years, or the jets just acquire one.
My final chance trade is bringing in Murray. If he can stay healthy, he can take a significant portion of the load off helly. A 52-57 and 25-30 game split between the two would keep helly fresh and rested for the regular season and playoffs, where he can hopefully play vezina caliber.
I also brought back namestnikov since he had a good season and showed he can be an impact guy higher up the lineup if needed.
Where do I think this team goes? I mean, if they can put it together, the sky is the limit. That said, I think a 3rd seed in the central is realistic. Then, as time goes on, the young guys coming up as soon as next year should help this team, dare I say, contend in the next couple of years.
I wasn't sure on teravainen's value so id love to hear from canes fans.
So just so I understand the thought process, Winnipeg moves out 3 contracts expiring in 2 or less years (PLD, Schmitt and Wheeler) to bring in 3 contracts expiring in 2 years or less and for worse players?! I get the point is to move up but there are easier ways to do that. All you have succeeded in doing is kick the can down the road.

I like mantha's game and would be willing to take him regardless of what happens. The jets have space upfront and need to make room on the backend. The goal was to kick the can down the road as lucius and lambert look to be top 6 guys within the next 3 years. My personal projection is that they spend a year in the A with some callups and then full time in 2024-2025. The main assets brought in are morrow and the 1st. Wheeler and schmidt need to be moved and I was trying to make the best out of a tough situation with them.
I don't agree though that mantha and johanson are worse than wheeler and schmidt. Mantha can bounce back, and even if he doesn't, he gives good middle six mins regardless. Johanson helps with faceoffs and doesn't have an NTC.
I doubt Nashville would retain, nice to see a forward group that has more legit NHL talent then less even if some of them are overpaid/not living up to their contracts.

I think it depends on how badly they want to shed his contract. They strike me as a team in the same position as the jets with schmidt, both decent players, just not living up to their contracts. The preds have room on their backend, and the jets have on their forwards.
