Congratulations to Buffalo! Of course I'm disappointed, but I wish Johnson all the best.

Don’t really care. First rounder and had to hear it for a year that he had no value (despite at worst being a late 2nd round value by default). Also you’re the guy who would give up 2 2nds for Jordan Harris. Johnson has a similar profile to him, played college just as long as him, and could very easily be just as good of not better. Don’t celebrate it, idc. Johnson’s name has been drug enough, I’m happy Buffalo signed him.

All of Harris' stats were better in college than Johnson's at a younger age. Also, he's put together a full NHL season with better underlying numbers than samuelsson has had at any point his career. Harris and Johnson aren't similar at all. And no one was saying Johnson isn't valuable, they were pointing out that if he's got one foot out the door whats the point in giving up assets for him?

Turns out he didn’t have one foot out the door, that’s mildly the point. And again as far as “assets” to give up to get him, you’d recoup a second if he walked from the team that held his rights. Seems like a mild risk/no risk at all to be able to talk to him ahead of FA.

Luckily we’ll be able to see how each plays out. My guess is Johnson’s underlying numbers are gonna be very similar to Harris’. No need to spend the assets on a 75 game sample size over 3 seasons for a 4/5 defenseman

Im fairly certain the recouping of assets is only if the team that drafted him lets him walk to FA. The acquiring team gets nothing. The Minnesota team RJ played on weren't good?! They were in the final 4 and absolutely loaded lol

This year yes. His first 2 years no. Also, I’m fairly confident the team holding the rights would get the comp pick. At least that was what I assumed/read. I could be wrong and that would change my assessment.

Compensation is for the team that drafted him because that team used a first rounder to select that player. And they get a 2nd rounder in the exact same slot as where said player was taken in the first. It wouldnt really work with the team that acquires him .

Guess I don’t see why it wouldn’t transfer with the player, but again, if it wouldn’t that would change the value over other teams to Buffalo.

Let's us all be happy that a player drafted in the first round 4 years ago agreed to sign a contract with the Buffalo Sabres.
Cut it any way one wishes it is something to celebrate.
Johnson along with Samuelsson were both projected to be 4/5 defensemen by:
https://dobberprospects.com/team/buffalo-sabres/ and
https://theathletic.com/3509824/2022/08/25/buffalo-sabres-nhl-pipeline-rankings-prospects/
With Johnson getter slightly better grades over Samuelsson by both rating services.
It is quite certain that he will be an improvement over either Bryson and Stillman as it cost the Sabres only an ELC.
Dahlin, Power, Samuelsson and Jokiharju will not reach their peak for several more years and other than Power all had to deal with difficult injuries throughout the year.
Before last season, I expected the Sabres to miss the playoffs but reach 90 points.
You can hold my feet to the fires, but they should reach 100 pts and make the playoffs in the 2023-'24 season.

EDIT: BTW Pilut is having a heck of a playoff, 3 goals 9 pts and a team leading +9 over 11 games.
He is a UFA so he could walk to another team.
If his resurgance translates to the NHL level, there could be interesting scenarios next season.
