Morning Coffee Thoughts

Created by: CupChaser
Team: 2023-24 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: May 28, 2023
Published: May 28, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- Bergeron comes back for $3mil for one final year, after the team can prove to him that they can cut cap and compete. He made his decision that he wants to raise his family in Boston - he's going to win the Selke, he's going to want to play again next year.

- I know that trading with Montreal is taboo, but with current MTL management being all Boston guys and former agents - bygons can be bygons. This trade services both. Gives MTL their goalie (lets be real - Montembault and Allen stink), gives them Grzelcyk so they can go Mathewson Grzelyck as 1 & 2 on the left side while they rotate their cast of prospects up and down as LD3 - Xhekaj, Guile, Struble, etc..... Bruins forward prospects suck. We could use a proven local kid in Farrell at the expense of a European unknown in Lysell

- Jonathan Gruden's father is the assistant coach of the Bruins. That aside, the trade is fair, and Gruden is far ahead of Merkulov development wise and can easily begin the season at 3LW

- Coyle can play wing effectively

- 4th line is absolute nails to play against

- Will Butcher was Jim Montgomery's captain in Dubuque USHL and UDenver.... They have a father/son type bond. Easy pairing.

though I love Ullmark, I don't think he plays into the window the Habs have. My only complaint with this trade(that I think many Habs fans would love)

Fair -- not being confrontational, but do the Habs have a goalie solution in the pipeline? Granted Ullmark's 2 years isnt a solidifier, what the heck happened with Primeau? Is he still in the mix? I remember when he was set to be the next Patrick Roy

Price is going to remain on LTIR, and eventually retire within the Habs organization.

Why did you pay over 5m for Domi? Dudes been bounced around the league like a sorority chick at a frat party and has never been more then a middle 6 scorer.

Lmao, Will Butcher

Oh so a chart of analytics says he is worth $3mil ..... Guess thats case closed. Nothing to do with him being the #1 free agent center who has had a great playoff and is looking for a long term spot to set his roots. Use your brain and eyes and watch the games, stat boy

I like the Pit trade but I'm not sure they have the cap for Hall.

a bit of misuse with Primeau and an era of "Price is the guy of the past, present, future" as management's mentality screwed us. Primeau although looking like an AHL Roy struggles when making the next steps. His positioning and calmness disappear at the NHL level, and is evident when watching the goals he's let in(sliding all over). Montembeault then Dobes are the shoe ins, but there is no solid goalie right now.

Looking like they'll draft one this year, or make a trade for a younger guy. Primeau is the perfect example of goalies being voodoo. Drafted late 7th round, won the NCAA Richter, plays great AHL, but looks lost in the show.

Not sure what direction Pens go in after hiring a new GM, but they definitely get older (slower?) in this trade. Everyone in Chicago was pleasantly surprised with what they got in Domi last year. Can definitely see them making him a new offer this year for more than last time ( need to get to cap floor). Could very well be a bidding war.

It's hard to imagine Orlov would sign for anything less than Lindholm money.

Habs trade is more than fair in value. I'd probably still pass. Doesn't address the needs, especially time-wise.

Grzelcyk = expiring contract (lost asset), under sized (Habs have enough of those, especially with Hutson coming), log jam at LD, and Harris is basically an equivalent.
Lysell = interesting addition. I think Bs are better off keeping him. Farrell is just as unproven as Lysell. To me, he's the core piece to this trade (only piece that fits the Habs plans). But where does he fit. Suzuki, Caufield, Slaf, Dach, Mesar, Farrell, Beck, Kidney, Roy, Kapanen, future 5OA pick. It just seems that what you're offering in Lysell, the Habs already have. But it is still enticing.

I assume to you the main piece is Ullmark. Good goalie, but the timing is off. He'll be 30 this summer, and when the Habs enter their true window, he'll be 32 with an expired contract. Montembeault: 26, a hometown kid, decent season (considering he was on an atrocious team with the most injuries). Looking good at the WC. Dobes is also a nice prospect. While neither are likely the Habs' saviours, their good place holders until we find the right fit.

Maybe this is a good starting point for a 3 way trade, where Ullmark goes to a team where goaltending is an immediate need for a current contender.

If Boston offered this to the Habs, the 100 year old rivalry would be officially squashed and they'd allow all of Boston 1 free poutine a year in MTL during the summer.

Alas, this would never happen, not because of the team rivalry but because it makes no sense for Boston to do this.
