Why? Carolina doesn’t have the cap and how does this intrigue Toronto.

If this was new GM’s first trade, wow. Unless it’s Peter Chiarelli in which case - it would totally make sense. Hence - he won’t get the job. Reprehensible return for a 40+ goal scoring winger in his prime

Yeah, they do. Canes have 30 million in space, they can straight up eat the Marner deal in a package for futures, this they can eat easy.

Canes absolutely have the cap space, and the leafs get rid of a player infected with laziness. If its such a slam dunk for the canes, then add draft capital. A first perhaps.

Who cares? Leafs are trying to win now. And btw - Aho, Reinhart, Schieffle are also pending FAs - I just don’t see those teams giving their players away either.

Well than. I’ve literally been told by every Carolina fan “Carolina can’t afford Marner” so idk

I meant taking on Murray's albatross of a contract - they have a ton of cap space - but that's a waste. If I'm TO I'm buying out Murray, and if I'm trading Willy to the Canes it's for a top-6 forwards (Necas or Tera) and a D - not another forward, especially since we have some Marlies (McMann) who deserve a chance on L4 next year.

How much do you think it'll cost to get rid of Murrays contract? A first maybe? So let me ask you, is trading a rental for 2 rentals and two top end draft picks a "give away"?

It's not this season that's the issue with Marner, it's next year when genuinely everyone not named Svechnikov, Kotkaniemi and Kochetkov expires. Nylander and Murray are both one year, and there's nothing that haunts the team long term here, Canes do this in a heartbeat

Buying out Murray doesn't clean him off the books. It just prolongs it. And there's no way the Canes take a rental for Necas.

Agreed - Willy would need to re-up long term with them. No - it doesn't clear him off the books, but no way Leafs trade assets to get rid of him and no team is going to do the Leafs any favours!

I got a feeling Willy's going to test the market in any scenario, he's just that kind of guy.

Two separate issues; but Murray out or trade him elsewhere - won’t cost that much imo but 🤷🏻.
Leafs trade Willy to Carolina and he immediately becomes their best pure scorer, exactly what they need. What do we get - a middle 6 + bottom 6 winger who combined scored about half of what Willy did. Reprehensible trade.

If you’re solely looking at fantasy points, then yes, its a bad trade. But if you remember that Nylander, a ppg player, was on powerplay #2 by the end of the season then you might realize he’s just not a good fit on the leafs. He’s never meshed well with tavares. He cant drive his own line. He’s a defensive liability and he’s a fairy. Yes he will do wonders for a struggling hurricanes offence. But we need more grit in our forward group, not another silky skater who doesn’t drop the mitts.

Agree to disagree; do you even watch the games? Despite your disparaging mischaracterization of Willy’s skill set, poor asset management won’t help any team get better. Every GM in the league would want Willy on their team so … again, a truly reprehensible trade proposal for coveted asset. Maybe Don Cherry for Leafs Gm 😂? bring back “rock ‘em sock ‘em” hockey, eh?

Maybe sign Wendel or Darcy Tucker while you’re at it? Love those guys but the game has moved on, apparently you haven’t 🤷🏻
