At this point I see them moving Walsh to a team needing a change/cap relief. I expect a Demelo type player now rather than at the deadline.

Not totally opposed to that but would have to be a one year deal. Need some flexibility for offseason 2024 and I feel confident that Nemec will be ready for 24-25.

Just kind of realized that a lot of Devils fans (myself included) have pretty much skipped over Walsh at bottom pair RD. Hes been very good in Utica, he plays a similar style to Nemec where it should help when Nemec is ready to slide in (as opposed to a player like Holl who plays a totally different game) and he is comfortable with Bahl. Dont see Walsh in NJ’s long term plans but he can be a good stop gap and generate some trade value for when Nemec is ready.

Certainly wouldn’t be the end of the world but the more I think about it the more Id really like to give Walsh a shot. Hes been good in the A, I think he plays a similar (just less experienced) game to Severson, and he’s comfortable with Bahl. Might make sense to have a veteran better than Smith around to push and compete for the job but wouldnt mind seeing Walsh get a run through TDL. If anything maybe it increases his trade value for when Nemec is ready to slide in.

Yes, yes, yes

Agree with Nemec in Utica for 2023-24
Agree with giving Walsh the chance
Agree with bringing a cheap vet to compete

Only thing is would want to avoid a Hughes/Walsh pairing too often. Match rookies with vets.

Definitely agree regarding Hughes and Walsh (or Nemec). In a perfect world we would have Sevo here for the next 2-3 years to bridge the gap perfectly. Unfortunately he is borderline the top FA this summer so that’s not gonna happen. We will have to make due with an imperfect situation and see what Reilly can bring.

Any ideas for a cheap vet to bring in and push? Either via free agency or a cheap trade option?

Anyone but Gudas or Schenn.
Ideally someone who fits in our system.

Justin Schultz maybe (got 1-year, $3m with SEA). Would be like Severson-lite. Has cup experience with Pens. Well liked guy.
