If you are shipping off Matthews and Marner, best not to sign any unnecessary ufas like Domi since the Leafs might not even be a playoff team for the duration of that contract. O'Reilly is kind of necessary, and Severson as well but only because you traded Brodie.

We can argue about the picks, but I could see a Necas/Marner move. I’m not convinced Marner is the player the Canes would be targeting, but this is one of the better trades I’ve seen posted for Canes and Marner.

I edited it since there was cap space and put Brodie back on. The Leafs are a playoff team with this lineup, they just lost the guys that don't show up in big games. Might actually squeak out a 2nd, 2nd round game win.

There's no guarantee, you're moving out their 1C and another top 6 player who play 20+ minutes, those guys happen to be the puck carrier and shooter on the powerplay, and one guy plays the PK. So, there's going to be a whole lot of change that could just result in them missing the playoffs. Most of the guys are new too, so makes you wonder how much chemistry there would be if any. In the following years, teams like Detroit, Ottawa, and Buffalo would probably overtake them easily.

Tavares is a 1C. With the additions of Domi and Necas, I don't think you need to worry about the PP. You also now have Laughton who kills penalties so that checks another one of your concerns. Now you also have a better RD in Severson so you are better in that position also. This team might actually be better...maybe nobody who puts up 50 goals or 100 points but more well rounded.

Tavares is a 1C but he's been playing the 2C role, he's going to have to start playing more, and that could lead him to struggle severely. There's probably not much chemistry since only Tavares, Nylander, and Jarnkrok have been around from the forwards for more than a season. You definitely do need to worry about the powerplay when it's getting completely changed. It might work out fine, but that's really being optimistic.

Just look at what happened with Calgary, when they lost two guys who were important to the teams offense, they also added a Dman to what was considered a strong dcore and things didn't work out well. Now Huberdeau was playing in a system that didn't suite his style, but instead of adding 3-new guys in CGY, you're basically just keeping 6 guys around.

The fact that you are calling a 20 year old a bust proves you know nothing.

The Islanders have a one of the most balanced teams, filled with a ton of hard-workers, Vezina calibre-goalie, two stud DDmen in Puloch and Pelech. They haven't had much success in the playoffs, and their powerplay is atrocious 15% in the regular season and 5% in the playoffs, even after adding Horvat. They are professionals too, and some of these guys have been playing the PP their entire career.

If you think Marner isn't a hard worker, you haven't watched much of his play since he entered the league. You also probably haven't watched Matthews much either, or Tkachuk.

The Isles have had much greater playoff success than the Leafs. 2 Conference finals in the last 4 years.

It's not success when you regress.

2018-19: 2nd round exit
2019-20: 3rd round exit
2020-21: 1st round exit
2021-22: Missed the playoffs
2022-23: 1st round exit

The Leafs are at least progressing forward, and have stability in that they are making the playoffs every year. They need to make changes but not changes that cause them to get worse.

It's not garbage... It's just not names of prospects/yougn players that the average fan recognizes (besides Byfield)

turcotte and byfield have been extremely underwleming and thats putting it lightly, more turcotte than byfield, walker is a depth d turning 29 this year, those picks become late picks, this is nowhere near enough for a half retained top 5 player in the world

Ummm...I think your dates are off. And you expect teams to progress farther every year? Seriously? I guess that means the Leafs should have won a cup a few years ago then. This is hockey, you aren't going to do better every year.

I think, Leafs decline the Matthews trade and would need to have a 3 team trade with Marner's deal (I like Necas, but would rather another young player with him rather than just him)
Buy Murray out, saves you 3.3 mill
Don't sign Domi, especially for over 3. I see that Allison is an RFA which means I'd prob. do the Laughton trade and sign Schenn, trade Brodie for something and spend the 18.8 mill on a solid number 3, Acciari and Kampf for LW4/C4 and a big body to smash for Matthews and Knies, get Sammy to 3.5/4 and could have line like this:

Knies - Matthews - Big body
Necas - JT - Nylander
Laughton - ROR - Jarnkrok
Acciari - Kampf - Allison/Lafferty
Roberston

Rielly - Severson (If this doesn't work, put Schenn here)
McCabe - Number 3 defence
Young Player - Lilly
Gio

Sammy

Obviously it's not enough, but it's still something... that's like everyone telling us Knies wasn't good because he did nothing until he was 21
