Accelerating the rebuild

Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens

Description
Winnipeg gets Florida's pick, a young, solid top 9 scoring winger with top 6 upside in Ylonen, and Dvorak, a reliable middle 6 center who has been stuck on terrible teams and is also under contract for two more years. I used the Jacob Trouba trade as a comparison.

Pittsburgh gets some much needed cap relief by getting rid of Granlund. This changes their cap hit from 5 million for the next two years to 3.15M in 23-24 and down to 1.4M in 24-25 when Edmundson becomes a UFA. They get some playoff grit with Edmundson who is 50% retained and get an injection of youth in Harris, a promising LD who's signed for two more years at an affordable contract.

Montreal flips pick 14 for Carter Hart. Goalie trades are hard to project, but I think it's a fair value.

This leaves Montreal with a little under 850k in cap space. I think they would have to move Jake Allen.

Hoffman is another player who has to go but it's not worth paying to dump his cap and I'm not sure that a buyout is the right option.

This roster leaves room for players like Mailloux, Roy, Beck and the 2023 5th pick to slot in. Hopefully they draft Michkov, but Leonard/Reinbacher would be perfect fits on this team although I'd like them much more at 6/7 than at 5.

I think that’s close on Hart but I think the Flyers would want another piece like a 3rd or decent prospect

No from Winnipeg. Neither player does anything or is needed or wanted by the Jets.

@Windjammer Looking at the Jacob Trouba trade, they got pick #20 and the signing rights to Pionk. Pionk, an undrafted player, was 24 and had 14 points in 28 games in 17-18 and 26 points in 73 games in 18-19. Ylonen projects to be a useful PP1 or PP2 guy. I don't know how much more the Jets can get from a contender but if they get a better offer, I don't think Montreal matches it. I could see a world where they trade pick #5 and #31/32 to Philly for #7 and #22 and then use #22 in the Dubois trade.

@TheBigFlyera, if Montreal would do the pick swap described above with Philly, maybe that, in addition to Pittsburgh's pick, would get it done for Hart? I could see them add a prospect like Kidney though.

I think that's the same or similar with Pittsburgh on this one. I'd think Mesar, Kidney, Struble are available.

I don't know Harris but is he worth 14 overall? Granlund and Edmundson cancel each other out and a 4th means very little.

No use, I added him to the ignore list. He responds to every single trade that involves PLD.. never happy cause he thinks Chev will get way more … Basically, he thinks Dubois can get 2X 1st picks, a top end prospect and a top 6 forward or top 4 dman… Doesn’t understand that Chev waited soooo long to get PLD out that his value just dropped again … Teams are even more reluctant to offer something at this point, even Hugues indicated that he won’t trade for short term (pretty sure by the statements made by Brisson that PLD will be ok signing long term in MTL but not elsewhere..) .. You made a more than respectful offer in your AGM .. I add even more assets to my trade, but it’s to save Chev’s face and keep their relationship on good terms.

Harris is one of the smartest players on the team. He has proven to be quite reliable. He's a good skater, good passer and protects the puck decently. Habs fans love him because he is extremely well spoken. He projects to be a decent top 4 LD. I see it more as a way for Pittsburgh to get a player who can help right away, isn't on the wrong side of 30, and doesn't have an anchor of a contract.

Yeah, that's cool. It's just that neither Montreal player fills a need or want for the Jets, so Winnipeg would just take an offer with players they need or want.

In a regular draft year, if the Pens have a high 20s pick, I would agree. But this is a year where 14 could net an A/A+ prospect. That is worth more than a young guy with good character traits who might be a top 4.

Based on your description, I'm guessing he could be had for a low 2nd or medium 3rd. Trading high picks for B level guys is not something a good GM does.

The Pens would pass.
