i do love when fans turn heel on players when its time to trade him. He gets dogged through the playoffs by fans for sucking at defense and getting torched by florida but now we use stats to prove he is worth a lot in a trade.

good times.

Bud - let me point out what should be obvious but apparently isn’t. Leaf nation has a lot fans - think of Canes fans and multiply by like a hundred - so there are a lot of opinions from leaf fans, many of them contradictory. It’s annoying sometimes but comes with the territory. Most leaf fans agree that Brodie was not at his best during this past playoffs but difference between him & Skej (particularly b/c Brodie is much better defensively which is priority for us given our forwards) is nowhere near the difference between nylander and necas so the deal doesn’t make sense for the leafs imo

The Leafs get one season of Necas at 3M and then have to pay him probably a similar sized contract to Nylander. Nylander is the better player and he’s made for the Toronto market. He’s been the only guy to continually show up in the playoffs. I’d rather extend Nylander this summer than trade him for a worse player along with Brodie for a worse defencemen and an AHL plug. The cap space savings are only for a single season

The issue isn't cap savings at all. The point is that Necas will still be under team control after this contract expires and Nylander won't. (Plus, even if you re-sign Nylander -- by no means guaranteed -- the difference between his new contract and Necas' will almost certainly still be the same as it is now, so your argument there doesn't hold up.) I agree that the best outcome for you is to re-sign Nylander in the summer. But that may not happen. And given the conflict surrounding his LAST negotiations, what makes you think that this time around is going to be easier?

His last negotiations were years ago under a different GM and under different circumstances in Nylander’s career and where the team was at. The better question is what makes you think this time around they would be the same? Objectively losing a trade just for some team control security and one year of cap savings is not it. I don’t see Nylander signing for any more than 9.5 AAV, and I’d rather Nylander at that than Necas at 7+, especially with the cap going up

I never said that you should take the trade or reject it. My comment was directed specifically at what I think is the wrong way for you to evaluate a trade. As your further posts demonstrate, the starting point of "better" vs. "worse" in your mind completely colors your analysis and is apparent if not explicit in every one of your comments.

What makes me think that this time the negotiations surrounding Nylander's extension wouldn't be any different than last time? History. We have exactly one example of how his side behaves, and it argues for my point. Here's one of the best pieces of insight into life that I can give you: Wall Street has a cliche that the four dumbest words one can utter are "This time is different." Or as Damon Runyon put it, "The race is not always to the swift, or the battle to the strong, but that's the smart way to bet."

It’ll be a cold day in hell the day I take advice from people on Wall Street

They have no leverage lol

Really??? hahahaha

You really need to check out the news. Jeff Markek broke it yesterday. PLD and his agent are giving the Jets at least 5 teams he will sign LT with and they will work with the Jets. Think the Tkachuk deal. Sign and Trade.

SO much better for the Jets now.
