If they decide to move on from JGP, the Isles are not retaining $2MM for three more years for that return.

That's all he's worth, the ILS are in a bit of a cap crunch , I'm sure they'd rather move Bailey but that it'll cost assets.

If we move out money this would be a good trade.

Pageau is one of the best defensive Centers in the league who can also put up 40-45 points a year. He is easily worth his contract and the proposal of Isles retaining for 3 years for low draft picks is far off. The isles will keep Pageau and pay to dump Bailey and be happy.

He doesn't average 40-50 pts, he does 30-40 pts, his value is his defensive ability but that is not worth 5 per year, I understand ILS not wanting to retain which can be diverted to a third team which I have no issue tossing that team an additional 4th to retain the salary

He had 40 points in 70 games this past season, a 46 point pace. The Isles are not moving him, Bailey is gone and has already been told he won’t be back. Pageau will remain an Islander.

First of all, over the 3+ years with the Isles, he's averaged 43 points per 82 games.

Second of all, the retainage isn't necessarily the problem. If you're getting him for $3MM x 3 years, it's going to cost more than a 3rd and 5th. If you choose to go the UFA route for a center, $3MM doesn't get you much at all; at $3MM JGP is a steal and will cost at least a 2nd plus.
