Ottawas guide to a successful season

Created by: Celtic
Team: 2023-24 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 15, 2023
Published: Jun. 15, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think these trades are mostly fair.

4th line LW is an open spot to be fought for during training camp. (Smejkal, Crookshank, Jarventie, Lodin)

The bottom Defence paring is also open to being fought for during training camp (De Haan, Kleven, JBD, Matinpalo)

Trades:

Sending Joseph to the penguins to be reunited with his brother and also opening up cap space for a 3rd just makes sense to me.

Sign and trade with DeBrincat (8x8) to Detroit. Yzerman is planning on being "aggressive" this offseason so I can see him making a good push to obtain DeBrincat. Getting Zadina back who has untapped potential which might burst open due to a change of scenery is a critical part of this deal because the 1st rounder is going to be flipped to the Jets.

The Hellebuyck trade is probably the most questionable one. it's a high-risk trade with many prospects going the other way, however, I think it is worth it for a goalie who could finally give the solution to the never-ending goalie issues Ottawa has had. It is up to the Jets if they are ready to start the rebuild or not.

UFA:

Max Domi fits the Ottawa Senators to a tee. Fits perfectly in that second line, good passer with a scoring touch and physical play, just another player to add to the pesky sens.

ZAR is a good physical defensive bottom 6 winger that would fit great on that 4th line. Can also add some offense.

Defense signings are all-depth signings to help with the bottom pairings and possible injuries. Traded away Thomson and Brannstrom so it was key to regain those spots.

Add Patrick Roy as head coach, keep DJ in some role with the team to keep players happy and this team is a contender.

Hellebuyck will require more quality, if he is willing to sign in Canada.

I'd take Domi for that, but honestly I think he'd be wanting more term. After this year I could see CHI or DAL offering him some stability so he stops bouncing around the league.

Hellebuyck won't accept a trade within Canada, he'll give Chevy a 3-4 team list of American teams that he's willing to sign long term with. Just like what Trouba did even that was only 2 teams.

Zadina may have untapped potential but he hasn't really shown anything so he could be a wash I wouldn't be willing to gamble on it Would rather a prospect with value in a return for a top 6 forward.

If you're trading Cat you should throw your hat into the ring for a player like Bertuzzi or Barbashev they seem to fit the mould of this Sens team.

Hellebucyk doesn't seem like a good option, doubt he resigns too. Could you offer a FA like Korpisalo or Jarry a mid range term deal for cheaper and it works out better possibly? Acquisition cost for Saros who I'd argue is a better goalie might be lower than what you proposed for Helle, same goes for Hart who is younger just lower career numbers

1. Pens are cap strapped, they can't afford to take Joseph for a pick, they would to send some AAV the other way

2. The NYI pick is interesting but Zadina is not. Gotta do something different. NYI 1st + Kubalik for example

3. I'm not trading half of that for a goalie who will need a big contract. Remove Sogaard and Brannstrom. 1st + 2nd + 2nd (Thomson) + 3rd (Sokolov) is more than enough

I would not be that suprised if Matinpalo makes to the team. What I have seen him play, he is pretty trustworthy bottom pair guy.
