NJD is taking Meier to Arbitration

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2023-24 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 16, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Devils are taking Meier to arbitration. Not an unexpected move as it removes both the $10m qualifying offer and possibility of an offer sheet. Bad news is that most players in his situation find themselves on new teams within two years. One has to think that a 1-year deal may be a possible outcome here. Even though Timo said today that he has instructed his agent to find 8-year agreement.

In other words it’s 8-years at around $8m or 1-year around $8.5m.

For as poor as Zetterlund was in San Jose, I wouldn’t consider this close.

They filed for arbitration, that doesn't mean it will go to arbitration. Boston filed for Arbitration with Brandon Carlo a few years ago and signed him to a 6 year deal

I really just wanted to tag SJS since it’s a topic Sharks fans are well-versed in. I am indifferent to the trade listed.

I would bank on Zetterlund’s upside every time.

Hasn't had a sub 3.00GAA in 3 years, or above .900 save % in the last two, and NJD went to Schmid over him in the playoffs.

Doesn't sound like it.

He can sign any deal now…and it’s likely a better negotiating point for NJD. But the reality is that most Arb cases end up with team and player separating within a couple of years.

2018: 43 players (38 no longer with team)
2019: 41 players (38 no longer with team)
2020: 26 players (23 no longer with team)
2021: 19 players (13 no longer with team)
2022: 24 players (12 no longer with team)

He was already at best the second option for NJD when they went out and signed Vanecek to a multi-year deal. When he wasn't playing well, they still didn't go to Blackwood, they bypassed him for Schmid. Who only had 6 games played prior to this season.

Toronto already has a young goalie they need to give more starts to. Sammy and Woll will be fine.

The talent/skill is there. Just not sure the maturity, professionalism are. With good health and good confidence, he could be good.

He just needs his head screwed on right. Over the last couple of years, he has let small injuries turn into bigger ones. Has tried returning too soon, didn’t tell team he was hurting (how we lost Wedgewood to waivers). He wasn’t taking care in his body and doing the preparation needed going into season. He has matured somewhat recently. He fired his old agent, made amends with GM, and at times seemed to be turning a corner. I think in right situation, he could rebound. Just has to grow up a little bit.

True…but have to understand the relationship he had with NJD management was rocky at best. He kind of entered the season on probation.

In the off-season before 2021-22, he didn’t do his rehab, didn’t really prepare for season. It took him forever to recover and our GM grew weary. So Blackwood rushed back, saying he felt healthy, but was hurting. So instead of keeping him on IR, we added him to roster…and put Wedgewood on waivers, who was claimed by Dallas. Then Blackwood said he was hurt and we had to go out and trade for a goalie. Our GM was pissed. Eventually, Blackwood fired his handlers, made amends to Fitzy and was invited back for 2022-23. But our team never played as well in front of him this year…and he still had some health issues.

The talent and ability to be NHL goalie are there. Confidence of his teammates, confidence in himself, his maturity, and his health have not always been there.

All of that doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy that he'd have the confidence to play in Toronto. I'm not sure if you've noticed (sarcasm) but this fan base is hard on its players.

If his confidence isn't already there, not likely he finds it here.

And aside from all that, Blackwood would be taking up a roster spot from Woll who has shown flashes that he belongs. Toronto needs to get him big time minutes. If by chance this deal did go through, Blackwood would need to sign dirt cheap to justify not only retaining salary on Murray but also sacrificing draft spots. It's much easier just to buyout Murray if need be.

Agree Toronto wouldn’t be best spot for the Blackwood rebound. Best would be small market team with a very professional, mature #1 to show him how it’s done.
