Overpay for 1 year deals

Created by: GarthBrooks

Initial Creation Date: Jun. 12, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Perry at 6.25 is not good but at 5 I'd take it. Also get some younger guys and picks in this deal. Why would Pittsburgh do this if they partially rebuilding it's cause they get their #1 goalie and get out of the petry deal. Also dubas gets "his guys"

This isn't an overpay for ROR at 1 year. The guy is looking at probably 10-15m over 2-3 years on the contract he's about to get from someone. This contract is only 6m dollars. Why would he risk potentially 5-10m dollars on a 1 year deal?

This is likely his last contract and if I was him a 1 year term is a non starter unless the money is a lot more than he will get AAV over 2-3 years.

I would say he's probably looking for 25-30 but likely has to settle for 15-20M.

@GarthBrooks, I don't understand the premise of Toronto having to overpay guys on 1-year deals. Anyone signing a 1-year deal in Toronto is doing it on a discount. The guys that they might have to "overpay" are players looking for multi-years by 1M or so on top of the UFA premium. Maybe 2M for a guy who doesn't want to play in Toronto originally on a multi-year deal.

Wood at 4Mx1 makes the Leafs look like they are the Blackhawks in a rebuild.

I think he's max getting 5 mil aav iunno it's up to him if he wants a 1 year raise after a down year. But I get what your saying he's not signing for like 3 mil like some of these other acgms

My idea behind this was Matthews and Nylander are gonna eat whatever remaining cap space we have with Nylander reported 9.75 and Matthews above 13 mil on a 4 year. Didn't want to sign or keep any long-term deals till the next off-season where we'd get a better idea where the cap is going to go

I actually hate this team if they these guys sign short max cap contracts like we gonna be stuck in the exact same position for years

I think Nylander will have to sign a max term deal or get dealt but if he wants 10-11M he's going to have to get dealt especially if Matthews isn't taking a max term deal for 13-13.5M or so.

I think the worst thing for the Leafs would be to resign Matthews to a short-term deal, then to a max term deal to until he's 38-40. If it's something like 12.675x3, then 14.34Mx8 (although maybe he doesn't resign with the Leafs) it might be okay, but if he wants well above 13M on a short term and possibly above 15 on the next one, I do think the Leafs are better off giving him a 16.7Mx8 deal now that at least expires when he’s 35. Would definitely limit their ability to compete for the next two years or more but at least that's through his prime years vs the tailend of his career.

The ideal case would be to sign him to an 8 year extension now, which could cost 14-14.5M, anything more though, they are probably just better off trading him if he allows him or "renting" him short term.
