Created by: GoCanes
Team: 2023-24 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 20, 2023
Published: Jun. 20, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- 1 trade based around weaponizing their cap space (T Hall)
- 1 bigger acquisition based around a cap controlled scorer (who can also be a RH C if needed - Schmaltz)
- 2 big bodied UFA signings (Acari and Soucy)
- Otherwise, we like our group
- Work to re-sign the pending RFA's and pending UFA's for '24
- Reports show Canes trying to bring back all 3 goalies
- Ink Patches to a low risk deal, but don't "depend on him"
- plenty of cap space and assets (picks) left to add at the deadline if they'd like
- it also gives them more players already signed for '24 on good contracts (Schmaltz/Hall/Soucy/Freddy/Staal in addition to KK/Svetch/Burns/Slavo) when the spend will go up to re-sign the core (Pesce/Skjei/Aho/Necas/Jarvis/Chatty)

If we need to get bigger, schmaltz isn’t going to help. He is another small perimeter player

I like the idea of Hall helping the Canes improve scoring, but salary retention seems unlikely unless the Bruins are already under the cap. Also, remember that the contract (and thus retention) would be for 2 years. I think it'll cost more than just a 2nd for that if the Bruins actually retain salary.

I'm just not sure you are going to see a "bigger" add in the top 6. Overall, this adds size and grit to the team. Who do you think is a realistic "bigger/physical" add for the top 6 that won't require tons of assets (which we likely won't give) or a huge new contract (which we won't want to pay given the UFA/RFA crunch we have in '24).

Yes, the retention could be less (~$1 million) or not used at all. If so, it's probably a 3rd-4th round pick at best. Hall is a good add, but he's not a great value at $6million. The Canes could afford him for this year and next at $6 million though as I don't see the Canes re-signing Teuvo

We asked for retention on schmaltz when we were inquiring at the deadline so i don’t think we find him to be a solution either. We could use him as the swap going to Winnipeg for PLD.

Bruins aren't going to be in the business of retention. Going to be scraping by just to field a 22 or 23 man team.

I think this is realistic and could see it playing out. Would love Keller or Cat over Schmaltz but not a bad plan B. Hall could be a nice fit but I think you have to remove the retention and then make it a third instead. Bruins won’t retain, especially for 2 years.

Soucy is a good target on the back end too. Missing a PP2 QB which might hurt but maybe we go crazy and go 5F on the second unit next year.

Fixed - T Hall for a 3rd with no retention. The cap is still in good shape for this year and next

Also, Skjei could potentially anchor PP2. But I like a PP1 of Svech, Aho, Schmaltz, Necas and Burns with a PP2 of Hall (LW), KK (C), Noesen (RW), with Jarvis, and Teuvo on the point

What about Hall for Teuvo with Canes retaining 50% ? Canes get their scorer and eat 2,700,000 this year, Boston opens 8,000,00 in cap and get a replacement for Hall

Not interested in making Hall an 8.7m player next year.

I just don't see us acquiring PLD... Don't forget that Svech and potentially a Pacioretty return significantly increases the Canes ability to thump next year. You could be looking at a regular lineup including those 2 along with Acari and Soucy who weren't part of this team in the playoffs. And don't forget that Hall is like 6'1 and 210. He's a bigger body too. That's a pretty big physical jump in an offseason.

I don't like the idea of including Teuvo. But the retention would only apply this year since he's a UFA in '24. Moving out Teuvo after a down year straight up for Hall doesn't really excite me. I think Teuvo potentially bounces back this season and I'd only move for Hall if it was for a pick to improve the top 9.

I don't like that idea... First of all, Hall didn't outproduce Teuvo this year (both guys were 30ish points in 60ish game players and goals were similar). Furthermore, Boston would have to pay some draft capital for the canes to eat $2.7 million. A recent article at the Athletic broke down those costs and it's a 2nd/3rd pick to retain $2-3 million for 1 year

Yeah I agree. None of a turbo Hall deal excites me and that’s without retaining on turbo which is a non starter. I think he bounces back this season and don’t think we’re in the habit of selling low.

Love Schmaltz! Can't see the Canes taking on Hall and his $6M cap hit for two years. I think that helps the Bruins more. Guess I'm the only one here.

I personally think the Bruins are better with Hall, and they should try not to trade him for cap relief. I think they should play him as their 2LW and plan to get his point totals up playing with Pasta. If they make the playoffs, I think he will be a key contributor. If they don't then they can retain salary and trade him for a solid prospect or a 1st round pick from a contender. He's not a centerpiece, but he has done everything asked of him in Boston and is definitely a guy I like having on my team. The main problem is that the Bruins window likely won't open again until his contract is up!

Im not even a canes fan, but this is a pretty solid ACGM. Really like what you did here and I think that you built a strong roster
