Description

Today Yzerman stressed these specific things in his presser.

Core will be 27 or under and they won't trade any draft picks for players older then that

Player has to have term on their contract

He will not trade #9

Only way he trades 17 or any of the 2nds is if player fits in core 18-27 and has term on contract that makes sense for the red wings

He won't be trading picks and prospects to improve for a playoff spot in the short term

He wants to build through the draft and short term fixes aren't going to happen

He rather fill gaps in free agency then through a trade so he can have the best of both worlds

Players develop at different time lines and he's not worried about making the playoffs or not, he just wants to improve and have his core and young players improve internally

He isn't opposed to moving up or moving back in draft depending what's out there.

This eliminates a lot of what people are posting on here, take it as you will, but this has been the same message for 6 years and hasn't changed today

Side note - this is why so many of us wings fans say no to every proposal on this site, it doesn't match up with what Steve says and does

My biggest take away is, that although he's open to the idea, he plans on keeping the picks. Now, if he plans on selling the prospects, well......

I think he's prepared to potentially trade the Boston 24 pick in a move, but he plans on making 9 +17. He seemed to say he would trade a prospect if it was trading from a position of strength to fill a position of weakness. Like a LD prospect for a RD one

I think you are right, more of the same this year, some free agents sprinkled in with more prospects getting more minutes and improving internally. He was saying that the cap hit means as much to him as the age of the player and he doesn't want to give out a lot of 7/8 year deals. I think that's directly at ABD and them not willing to pay Ottawa's price as well as what his contract demands are. I just wish the rest of the fan base understood what Steve is doing and could be more patient.

Tampa started their rebuild with stamkos and hedman, it took them almost 10 years for all their prospects to develop and to really go for it. We are getting closer with Seider/Larkin era. Give it some time and be patient and we will have a juggernaut with an endless supply of amazing prospects to continue filling the cupboard.

Sure but I think this post was more aimed at the people who complain about Detroit fans saying no to trades. Yzerman seems to be a pretty straight forward GM. So although he doesn't say much; when he does it tends to be true.
