Please trade down

Created by: jonh514

Initial Creation Date: Jun. 22, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Let's say Michkov is available at 5 and the Habs don't really want him.

If the Habs trade down for 9 & 17 they are guaranteed to get one of:

Benson
Leonard
Reinbacher
Dvorsky

at 9. I would honestly be happy with any of them. I don't think one is necessary guaranteed to be better than the other and the Habs would be made better by any of them, but then they get to fill another hole at 17. That player at 17 would be an important part of this team going forward. We're talking about one of:

Willander
Simashev
Perreault
Danielson
Honzek

Any one of those players would sit pretty high on our prospect depth chart. Some of them (like Simashev or Willander) could actually become the steal of the draft.

I get that it's better to get one elite player than 2 players who are not Elite, but picks 6-17 all look like they'gonna be awesome and I would love to have 2 of them on my team

Detroit has been rebuilding longer than the Habs. You may be 1 player away, but the Habs certainly are not.

Sometimes the best deal is one that works out for both teams.

Certainly.
But an issue that could interfer with something like this occurring is that reports say Michkov is not talking with teams he doesn't want to go to. If true, I'm a little more hesitant as he could end up like PLD even if Detroit is a team he wants to go to.

Reinbacher and Dvorsky arent in the same bracket as Leonard or Benson imo. Would be a big mistake to trade down just cause they pass on Michkov, that draft class is stacked. Leonard would probably have been 1st overall last year, if anything I think some teams would be interested in the 5OA to draft him and not Michkov. Hes gonna drop for sure so why would anyone trade up for him.

There is just a ton of gamesmanship around Michkov right now. Like Washington who's amateur scouts have never spoken out about a player before but are screaming very loudly how they "don't want Michkov" because he was "rude".

No scout would ever do that ahead of the draft if they did not secretly want him.

If Washington hated Michkov, they would stay quiet about it because they would hope one team ahead of them might take him which means there is one less team potentially picking the player they want.

By screaming about how bad of a prospect he is, they are hoping to make the teams ahead of them, like the Habs, doubt Michkov as a prospect in hopes that he might fall to them.

I would not pay any attention to the Michkov noise. It's all ramping up ahead of the draft.

Fair fair.
I just don't wanna end up with a Lindros -- no one does.
This draft has the potential to define the end of the rebuild and the beginning of contention for Detroit.

I appreciate your response.

The closest comparable I've seen to Leonard is Sam Bennett. Good player. Nasty to play against on the ice and in the corners. But not a 1st OA even in a down draft.

That being said, these picks (6-17) are all guaranteed to return an NHL player but lottery tickets as to which players will have star power. Lots of talk for example that Leonard needed Smith & Perreault to make him score the way he did and that Leonard and Perreault should switch places in the draft. I'm not saying I buy that, but Leonard & Benson are not guaranteed to be NHL stars (Though Benson would be a beast with 3 more inches and 20 more pounds on him).

I would trade down but I doubt the Habs will. No GM wants the other teams deciding which player they leave him.

I hear you! Michkov seems like a character. A lot of comparisons in personality to Eichel. I don't hear Vegas complaining though!

I get your operator but not your logic sir.

Are you saying all 5 players are more or less equal or something else?

Yes, I would probably rank them:
Reinbacher
Perreault
Simashev
Dvo
Leonard (but all in the same general tier)

Leonard Benson and Michkov will be gone by 9th. Best selection here would be Dvorsky or Moore.

I don't think it's smart to pass on the elite talent, to get 2 less than talents.

If anything the Habs should move up to the teens from 31st.

I'm telling ya! It's not cut and dry between Smith, Leonard, Perreault who make that line go. A lot of scouts say Perreault was a huge part of it.

He'll be a fine 2nd line player, I just don't see super high upside. With Simashev's skating he easily has the highest ceiling in the group, Dvo is remarkably talented too, just a bit inconsistent, and imo Perreault also has a higher upside and is a bit riskier but was certainly not just tagging along on that line, he can drive play himself. (And Reinbacher is Reinbacher, I'm lower on him too, imo ASP is the number 1 d man in the class, but he's still better than the rest of those guys)

I think you'll see Perrault at 17-22. Imo, Leonard is the meat and potatoes. Perreault is a Claude Lemieux. Middle six complimentary guy. I feel like Smith will be the next Turcotte. I think he will struggle to adapt his game effectively.

Yeah that's fair, I mean I haven't went back and rewatched Leonard since the U18s, but I feel like popular consensus on him was where I'm at until after the season, so I certainly could be missing smth.

I think the real debate will be how goes first between Benson, Leonard & Michkov if he falls to 5th. Personally, I feel like Smith may fall to 7th.

Yeah, I would be stunned if Leonard falls past 7, and wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if he goes sooner. I just personally would let another team take him if I had a pick that high

Fun fact: Dmitri Buchelnikov who was Wings 2nd round pick last year was Mitckov's linemate in the MHL. Maybe Michkov and Buchelnikov could have a chat about the Wings hushed
