Way too much for one year of Hanifan. Better and cheaper goalies available as UFAs

Respectfully to the two players you’re trading to Carolina - they aren’t a team who is going to overpaid by twice what those players bring to the ice and give up a 2nd to do it.

Can get better fits by resigning our own players or going UFA

What's the plan for Canes then ? Wouldn't be smart to replace Staal, Statsny, Pacioretty with younger guys, who can score ? I know Svechnikov is coming back, but clearly none of Canes' UFA can score like VO. I think is perfect fit for Canes, since they can easily cover his defensive liabilities with other linemates. If Sabres agree retain full 50%, 2nd round is great deal for Canes. He is also UFA after next season, so he does not block Aho/Slavin extensions

I see nothing you’ve said related to Comrie and Olofsson. They will execute their plan by not wasting draft picks to over pay replacement level players.

I understand the words that were written, but didn’t understand their content.

Both players from Buffalo are paid twice + what they are worth. Comrie is a replacement level goalie you can get as a UFA. ‘VO’ is at best a 2m one dimensional PP specialist.

You want the canes to give you a 2nd for two over paid players?

I am not defending this trade, since Comrie will probably go through waivers with Sabres. He does not fit for Canes.

But I will still defend Olofsson trade to Canes. He is not PP specialist, he is pure goal scorer, he improved a lot in 5v5 hockey. He is being traded, because Sabres prospects need NHL ice time, and VO is the guy, who need good situation to be productive. Sabres are in no position to give him top 6 minutes, while I think teams like Canes or Stars would be.

As a Sabres fan, I love the Hanifin deal and absolutely hate the Gibson deal and I'm not even as low on Gibson as most people.

VO would play 10 mins a night in the Carolina system, not a 4.7m player IMO…and def not for a 2nd

The Canes cannot cover his defensive liabilities with other linemates. The entire system is based on man to man defense, as opposed to the more common zone. This means that a forward is defending two players every time VO is on the ice (because he is that much of a defensive liability). The Canes penalty kill is very good - it was second only to the Bruins last season - but I do not think anyone wants to play what is essentially the PK for 10 extra minutes a game. In Carolina, he would basically be a PP specialist because that is when his defensive liability can be masked by the other team not having a 5th skater.

I’m very low on gibson I think he’s worth a 2nd at best but someone will pay that value for his name sake

Same for GIbson. The Ducks will need to add a sweetener with Gibson.
