In Advance of Draft

Created by: benjgc
Team: 2023-24 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 22, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I figure one more D COULD get moved out (Peeke or Boqvist), but if they want to have some depth going into the year, this is a way to do it. Backlund isn't a long-term piece for Calgary, so he makes sense as a target for the CBJ. Carlsson (or Fantilli if the Ducks go the other way) and Voronkov need time to marinate in the AHL, so that's where they start here.

Trades
CBJ
  1. Backlund, Mikael
  2. 2024 4th round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Calgary deals away a player who doesn't want to re-up, and receive a talented but enigmatic player at C in Roslovic and a versatile defenseman who needs an opportunity and a change of scenery in Bean. Just a bonus that he's the CEO's kid. I figure this isn't made in a vacuum, and the inevitable trades of Toffoli and/or Lindholm and/or Hanifin to other teams free up the necessary cap room for such a deal. (And for those who say Roslovic doesn't want to play in Canada, he's not a free agent, so tough luck, Jackie boy. Besides, Calgary would doubtless give him a chance to play in the middle, which he badly wants.)
CGY
  1. Bean, Jake
  2. Roslovic, Jack
  3. 2024 3rd round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
The mass exodus in Calgary gives an opening for Columbus to acquire a center who can help their young guys (Sillinger, Johnson, Voronkov) develop at the top level. I figure Backlund waives his NTC to come play with Gaudreau again.

I wouldn’t hate it. I also wouldn’t be opposed to signing Ryan oreilly to tandem a top 6 moving jenner to the wing.
5.5x3 for ror and let backlund walk after the season. (Or flip him at tdl for assets if we suck).

Can’t imagine Columbus not being on Backlund’s no trade list

As noted in my trade writeup, I figure he waives for the chance to play with Johnny Gaudreau again. Wouldn't hurt that he'd get to mentor another young Swedish center (Carlsson).

That assumes that ROR wants to sign with Columbus, which I'd love, but I won't hold my breath.

I don't mind that trade - Your penalty kill just got better and he'd fetch a decent price at Deadline if he doesn't resign
Would love to see Columbus get that true #1 Center though, that would be a game changer! (Hoping Carlsson or Smith pan out for you!)

Thanks for the feedback! And yeah, I wouldn't hate seeing our PK take a massive leap forward.

People overestimate NTC lists...considering he can play with JG, gets a chance at his age to up his value during a contract year and to mentor a young center (most likely a fellow country man) I wouldn't be shocked if he doesn't mind waiving. Honestly wouldn't be shocked if he would resign either. This is a win/win for them especially with the turmoil going on there "soon" as its not looking pretty there.

Because he's excellent defensively, and still has promise (and to showcase him for the trade deadline)
