Maybe add one of their D prospects. Lassi Thompson perhaps?

I like the FA signings. Don't love Varlamov as a #1 though. Also if we bring in Cat, what about Guentzel? last year of his contract etc.

Yeah too much for Cat. Remove one or both 2nds and add like a 3rd...

They can extend him as well with the Carter money. I suspect that if they can't have an extension negotiated for Guentzel before the draft, they should trade him. But I assume he stays around 8-8.5m a year.

And yes Varly is definitely best as a backup. But I can see Dubas running with a Tandem and upgrading at the deadline if needed.

Maybe keep the trade as is but add in JBD from Ottawa. He is a young defensive RD. Ottawa has a few young RD and LD prospects. JBD would be a nice add.

Would he be top 6 ready? I'm unfamiliar with him.

Yes he should. At least be given a serious look. He is 22 and he is a defensive dman. He will be in the same category as smith and POJ in terms of readiness.

I like acciari and wood but that’s a no for me on the trade. Small forwards is the last thing we need.

Hmm. Well then maybe add him to the trade and Rutta going the other way. Then you would have another 1.5MM or so to upgrade something else.

Also, I don't see Granlund on this team come next year.

Why? The 14th OA pick is nice but the 2 other picks are delayed in time. It's pretty similar than what they paid to get him (because the 2023 draft is better and 2nd vs 3rd), which was considered as a steal by pretty much everyone

NHL players are scouted very carefully, DeBrincat has a really good track record and a high end skillset. Scoring 12 pts less than his career under particular circumstances didn't kill his value. He's most likely going to be traded with an extension

No, from Ottawa perspective, Thompson still has more value than any of the 2nds here. More like a 2023 second

Even less, JBD has late 1st value from Ottawa's perspective, he will be needed to replace Zub in the future as he will be 32 when his contract expires. RHDs who are good defensively don't grow on trees.

I think 14th OA + 2nd in 2023/2024 + 3rd in 2023/2024 would be more fair
