Huge overpayments for Gibson. I’d give that or a little more for Helle or Saros but Gibson isn’t an upgrade from VV and definitely isn’t worth a good D prospect and a 2nd!

Among goalies who played at least 10 games, Gibson ranked 60th in GSAx/60 this year. He would have been the worst goalie on the Devils.

The whole point of expected goals is to adjust for team impact. Stolarz and Dostal both saved roughly what they were expected to. Only Gibson was deep in the red.

It’s quite likely that Gibson (and Stolarz + Dostal) played behind league worst defenses, but GSAx indicates that Gibson underperformed even such weak defense as the ones Anaheim ice in 22-23. The Devils shouldn’t take Gibson and his contract on for free, let alone paying Casey, Vanecek and a 2nd for the privilege of having him stink it up in their crease.

That takes into account the Ducks defense. Gibson was worse than the 2 other noname goalies the Ducks had. This would be trading for a name and that’s it, possibly the worst thing you could do with this team right now.
